Chapter 1: The Beginning of My Journey

In 2022, I found myself at a low point. My husband and I separated, and I moved back in with my parents, leaving behind the dreams I once had. I felt lost and uncertain about my future. Before this upheaval, I had already been facing significant life changes—quitting smoking two years ago, stopping drinking nine months back, and losing my only close friend. It felt as if I had lost my identity.

I was deeply familiar with feelings of worthlessness and despair. I questioned my purpose and felt utterly unlovable. Every choice I made seemed to lead me further into darkness, and the thought of my son growing up without me terrified me. I realized I needed to seek help.

One day, while browsing Amazon Kindle, I stumbled upon "The High 5 Habit" by Mel Robbins, which was on sale for just $2.99. Despite not knowing much about it, I impulsively bought both the book and the audiobook.

As I read, I found myself highlighting impactful quotes and passages that resonated with my struggles. One quote stood out: “It had been a hell of a few months. The stress was nonstop. I’d been so busy taking care of and worrying about everyone and everything else, who was taking care of me?” This thought struck a chord with me, making me feel seen and understood. I immersed myself in the audiobook, driving aimlessly just to hear Mel remind me of my worth.

Although the High 5 Challenge is originally designed for just five days, I decided to extend it to 30 days and documented my journey on Instagram to keep myself accountable. On the first day, I felt a mix of embarrassment and joy; it was the first time I had laughed in months. I sensed that this challenge was a pivotal moment in my life.

Mel said, “The most powerful forces in the world are encouragement, celebration, and love. And you have withheld them from yourself.” By giving myself that high five, I was affirming, “We’ve got this.” This simple action felt more effective than any affirmation I had tried before. The confidence I gained from that first day was miraculous. Although I still felt lonely, I found solace in the fact that I had rediscovered myself.

Each morning, I took a photo of myself high-fiving the mirror and shared it on Instagram. Sometimes it was in my bedroom, other times in the bathroom, and on days I needed an extra boost, I’d snap a pic at my son’s doctor’s appointment or in my car’s reflection.

Having not posted on social media for months, I was sure my followers thought I had lost my mind. Yet, perhaps it was necessary to step out of my comfort zone to start living again. I began to look forward to my daily mirror ritual, cheering for myself instead of criticizing my every move.

I shared deeply personal experiences that many could relate to, and to my surprise, people from around the globe joined in on my challenge, high-fiving along with me. It dawned on me that my struggles would not be in vain. I am still healing and navigating life’s uncertainties, but each day, I commit to giving myself a high five. I aim to share my journey and the lessons I've learned, becoming a guiding light for others facing their own rock bottoms.

Mel’s book explains the science behind this method, and she even commented on my Instagram post—making us practically best friends! The book elaborates on why the High 5 Habit is effective, so I encourage you to read it for yourself.
