Effective Strategies for Launching Your Early-Stage Startup
Written on
Chapter 1: Introduction to My Startup Journey
Launching a startup can be a daunting task, especially in its early stages. I’ve developed a method to streamline this process and effectively market our product. This journey is documented in a Notion board filled with valuable resources and insights.
This isn't just another Notion board; it's my third attempt since the summer of 2022 to refine our product launch strategy. The previous board had its flaws, primarily in how it organized information.
Between us, navigating this project has proven to be challenging, particularly since I have had to figure much of it out independently. With a decade of experience in the tech industry, including roles as Product Owner, Product Manager, and Project Manager, I still find it difficult to pinpoint the most effective steps to take. Thankfully, I have two skilled Lead Developers specializing in iOS and Android by my side.
Our product addresses several pain points that professionals like us face daily, which inspired us to embark on this entrepreneurial adventure.
- So, where do we begin?
- Honestly, I'm not sure…
This exchange encapsulates our initial uncertainty. I suspect many others share this experience.
Why Create a New Notion Board?
The previous board served its purpose but lacked a logical structure for information. Allow me to clarify:
The structure includes:
- Quick access links
- Discussion topics
- A backlog for task prioritization
- Actionable steps
The primary issue with the old board was its failure to provide clarity and vision. I felt lost and unsure which tasks contributed the most value. In hindsight, I could have used bullet points for all the difference it made.
At this stage, we don't have a product on the market, nor do we have customers to engage with. I need to focus on specific steps rather than a broad overview.
Initially, I approached this with a mindset geared toward project management, which turned out to be a misstep that cost us weeks of stagnation.
A Necessary Reevaluation
So, what does a suitable board for an early-stage startup look like? Here’s my insight into creating an effective project board.
How I Identified the Right Steps
Like many, I turned to Google to gather information on Pre-Product Market Fit (PMF) and the steps required for a successful product launch. If you're curious about pre-PMF, I recommend looking at my search history, which includes various resources.
After sifting through the information, several websites caught my attention: Techreviewer, Venture Bay Labs, BoltGroup, Startups, The Hartford, and The Lean Startup. However, most of these resources were too generic and didn’t provide actionable steps. Only one met my requirements: BoltGroup.
The site outlines ten key milestones to follow, which I've categorized into three main areas:
- Technical: Product design (BUILD)
- Marketing: Communication and promotion (MARKETING)
- Business: Pitching and scaling (BUSINESS)
Here’s how each milestone aligns with its respective domain:
- Outline the development methodology and budget → BUILD
- Negotiate agreements with development partners → BUSINESS
- Define your brand/product/service roadmap → MARKETING
- Create a compelling pitch presentation → MARKETING
- Develop, test, and validate a "proof-of-concept" → BUILD
- Create your brand → MARKETING
- Build, test, and refine the initial MVP → BUILD
- Develop an initial marketing strategy → MARKETING
- Generate sales with early customers → BUSINESS
- Acquire additional investment → BUSINESS
With this clearer framework in mind, I was ready to build our new Notion board.
Chapter 2: The New Notion Board Setup
The new Notion board, titled "Start-Up Early-Stage," is structured as follows:
The Notion space is divided into five key areas:
- A ReadMe section explaining how to navigate the board
- Quick-access links for easy retrieval
- A to-do list for minor tasks
- Milestones, MVP roadmap, and a link to our Miro whiteboard
- A dedicated space for each team member's resources
This organization allows for efficient project methodology tracking.
Our Startup's Milestones
As previously mentioned, I needed to clarify the milestones for our MVP. Through research, I compiled ten milestones displayed in a gallery view.
The goal is straightforward:
1 milestone = 1 objective = 1 resource to achieve that objective.
MVP Roadmap
Having a roadmap allows me to prioritize effectively. Each task is categorized based on:
- Effort
- Value
- Trust
- Risk
Highlighting tasks by their value helps answer the crucial question: Where do I start?
User Journey
Given the complexity of our product, I need to visualize the user journey for quick reference. Notion’s versatility allows for the integration of various tools, enhancing our workflow.
Individual Access
We utilize Notion as a communication and progress-tracking platform, ensuring that everyone has access to their respective areas of the project.
Lastly, there’s a section for storing resources, which must remain intact and unaltered.
