Unlocking the Secrets of Existence: The Nature of Mind and Space

Written on

Chapter 1: Understanding the Essence of Existence

The depth of space transcends conventional understanding. It's essential; without it, you cannot truly find yourself.

What if your true existence could be easily recognized? It's not merely a tale of your place in the cosmos or any narrative of that sort. Instead, it's about grasping reality directly and genuinely. In an instant, you can become aware of your authentic self, stripped of all distractions. Does this resonate with you? Could it transform your life?

Anyone willing to engage can access this state of awareness. You can perceive the fundamental fabric of existence, a flow of information that spans all states of being. If you desire, you can know everything that has ever existed, exists, or could exist. The term omniscience gains real meaning for you, as you intimately recognize the essence it signifies. You transcend the limits of thoughts and concepts, achieving a profound understanding of everything in intricate detail.

There is no unfulfilled desire or need. There is a perfect balance, a state of wholeness in which you recognize your consciousness as your true self. Bliss permeates your awareness, and all of this can be attained effortlessly.

Wouldn't such a realization be captivating?

The challenge lies in the description. Initially, you might think, "Nothing is that simple." Yet, this effortless simplicity is precisely what guides you to your own profound awareness. You can verify this truth yourself by simply doing nothing. Yes, it’s that straightforward.

However, you may find it surprising how difficult it is to allow yourself to experience zero effort. Yet, you can spontaneously tap into this awareness. You can let your understanding unfold without forcing it.

Ultimately, the simplest thing is to simply be aware without exertion. This state of effortlessness is profoundly creative and sublime once you embrace it.

Many people have experienced moments where they become so engrossed in an activity that they lose track of time. Artists, musicians, and even gamers often find themselves in this state. You immerse yourself in the awareness of that moment, detached from all else.

When life flows effortlessly, you experience the seamless fulfillment inherent in existence. This isn't magic or fantasy; it’s your inherent access to a state that is the foundation of all creation. It’s simply you, being aware—nothing more.

You might scoff at the idea, thinking, "What’s the sound of one hand clapping?" But this is merely a way to illustrate that awareness exists beyond conceptual thinking. To achieve this recognition, you must consciously acknowledge your presence beyond the relentless stream of thoughts and emotions—often referred to as "monkey mind."

Section 1.1: The Nature of Monkey Mind

"Monkey mind" describes our habitual state of distraction, constantly flitting from one thought to another. Numerous paths exist to guide your consciousness away from this scattered state. However, it seems counterproductive to take the long route, especially since you don’t need to make any effort to understand the nature of your mind.

But what is this nature? What fundamental quality forms the basis of all existence? What is the key to existence that has been promised to you?

Let me reveal the conclusion upfront: The nature of mind is space, and the nature of space is mind. This unity serves as the foundation from which all things emerge. Your unimpeded awareness of this foundation is essential for comprehending everything that exists. Told you, it couldn't be simpler—literally.

Chapter 2: Revisiting Our Understanding of Space

Space is not what you’ve been led to believe.

In Western thought, space is often viewed as a void—a neutral backdrop that only matters when filled with physical objects or energy. This conceptualization depicts space as a mere foundation of physical existence, an empty vacuum unless something material arises within it.

Even advanced scientific theories like relativity and quantum mechanics often treat space as a mere state of material existence. However, when you realize that the essence of space and mind is one and the same, you will understand that space is an unchanging, primordial state of being that manifests itself spontaneously.

Once you experience awareness of space in this manner, doubt or uncertainty dissipates. Instead, you perceive universal wholeness; everything exists simultaneously within the nature of space as an unconditional union.

Non-duality embodies the pure nature of your mind—a state of simultaneous existence throughout space.

Does that sound empowering? When you grasp this insight, you'll realize that words become irrelevant. Until then, it's crucial to clarify what non-dual awareness entails. In recognizing this state, your focus can only be on non-duality; there’s no contrast, no past or future—only immediate presence, wholly empty yet effortlessly encompassing everything in that singular moment.

No effort can lead you to non-dual awareness since all effort implies a desire for transformation from one state to another. Change is impossible in the non-dual realm because the nature of space is inherently simultaneous. Everything exists exactly as it is, without the need for alteration. Many seekers mistakenly believe they lack something, perpetuating the delusion of effort.

The non-dual state is inherently perfect. Your awareness, stemming from the nature of mind, is never absent, although it can become distracted.

Section 2.1: The Nature of Dissatisfaction

Dissatisfaction is a prevalent aspect of human life.

If you were born human, especially in the West, you’ve likely been conditioned to rely on your physical senses to perceive reality. Yet, scientific studies reveal that your senses can only relay events that have already transpired in relation to past experiences.

Through your senses, you perceive the material world in retrospect. For instance, you know that light from the sun takes about eight minutes to reach Earth. When you gaze at stars, their light may have traveled for hundreds or thousands of years before reaching you. Thus, your perception of the night sky consists of echoes from the distant past.

Your response to sensory stimuli also involves a delay. True presence cannot be achieved solely through physical senses.

However, awareness is a function of the mind, often referred to as the sixth sense. But what does it sense? Space, of course. This state occurs before dimensions or sequences manifest—space is an endless source of information.

Once you realize that mind and space share the same timeless presence, your understanding of reality transforms. You can choose to focus on past sensory experiences or embrace the present awareness of your mind.

Alternatively, you might find yourself caught in a muddled confusion, instinctively trying to reconcile past and present—a conflict that typically breeds unhappiness.

Section 2.2: The Path to Effortless Awareness

You don’t need to carry baggage if you have none.

As previously mentioned, the key to understanding the nature of mind lies in being aware without effort. However, you’re accustomed to exerting effort in nearly every aspect of your life. From an early age, you learned to react and cope, leading to a habit of doing.

You need not strive to be aware; awareness arises spontaneously from the mind. Yet, through physical sensations, you’ve been conditioned to make distinctions and assign values such as good and bad, right and wrong.

You’ve learned to depend on these skills for survival in a dualistic world where desires govern your choices. The physical realm is characterized by dualism; things come and go, fluctuating in a cycle of change. Everything—pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral—is transient, beginning with your physical form.

However, the essence of mind is non-dual, unchanging, and eternally whole. You can rely on the presence of mind at all times. Even in sleep, you experience this nature. Recognizing this is all you need to escape the cycle of striving.

Simply be aware—nothing more.

If you remain focused on sensory contact, you’ll tend to construct dualistic narratives that require effort. Thoughts and emotions will arise, but your engagement with them is merely habitual—a learned response. You can allow them to come and go without attaching significance to them.

To understand the nature of mind, cease trying to control your reactions to the material world. Of course, this assumes you’re in a safe environment to let go of reactive behaviors.

All awareness is a sense of space—stillness that requires no effort. Observe the fluctuations of conditional consciousness that obscure space without clinging to any of it. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how effortlessly this can be achieved.

Chapter 3: The Quest for Awareness

If this understanding is so vital, why isn't it more widely recognized?

Surprisingly, this isn’t new information. It’s simply overlooked by mainstream culture. Materialism, cloaked in capitalism, thrives on the continuous lure of the next new thing. This fast-paced cultural system is not designed to profit from your natural fulfillment.

The importance of non-dual awareness has roots in ancient human wisdom. Recognizing the true nature of your mind is central to every authentic spiritual tradition. Every individual throughout history has shared this understanding, regardless of cultural context.

You’ll encounter terms like attainment, realization, liberation, and enlightenment—each referring to the same state of clear awareness of effortless being. This is the essence of the sacred. You can perceive this directly when you arrive at that state. As I often state, words lose their significance in the end.

Nonetheless, you may find the insights of others who have achieved this awareness helpful in alleviating your resistance to recognizing the nature of mind.

Section 3.1: The Wisdom of Tibetan Teachings

Thanks to the upheaval of Tibetan culture in the 1960s, people today have access to profound insights that were once closely guarded. Surviving Tibetans understood they must share this wisdom or risk losing it forever.

Imagine the deep sorrow tied to losing something so precious. Techniques for understanding the workings of your mind are now readily available in multiple languages, often for just a few dollars—whereas, in the past, an earnest student might spend a lifetime grasping a single teaching.

Dzogchen exemplifies an ancient methodology yielding consistent results. It's the most powerful tool I've found for comprehending consciousness.

At the heart of Dzogchen lies the direct experiential realization of mind's nature. It serves as a potent means to unlearn the unnecessary efforts ingrained in life. Although now accessible to many, it's not suitable for everyone. These teachings were secret for good reason.

You need a certain level of self-awareness to benefit from Dzogchen. Traditionally, it was the culmination of extensive studies in other areas that prepared individuals for these profound insights.

Interestingly, some Westerners, sensing pain in their materialist lifestyles, have developed a sensitivity akin to what is cultivated through traditional studies. While they may lack the specific tools of Tantra, this awareness can open doors to Dzogchen that might otherwise remain closed.

Yes, you'll need to learn about energy flow in your body to recognize the subtle efforts you make, often unconsciously. However, many can grasp this through Dzogchen preliminaries and basic breathing practices, picking up supportive Tantra practices along the way.

While some Tibetan instructors adhere to strict monastic structures, others have adapted Dzogchen teachings for Western audiences. Central to all teachings is the direct introduction to the nature of mind. The teacher points this out, and the rest is commentary on your ongoing experience.

I won’t spoil this profound moment for you should you seek it. It’s inherently simple. You may approach it thinking you need something you lack. If I've succeeded here, that misconception should now be dispelled.

When you receive a direct introduction to the nature of mind from a Tibetan lama, it may take time to fully comprehend what occurred. Eventually, you may find yourself laughing out loud at your own realization.

Chapter 4: Science Approaches Non-Dual Awareness

Some scientific circles are beginning to explore this terrain.

Cautiously and with some reluctance, science is starting to address the existence of mind. A framework built on the primacy of the material world has yet to effectively engage with consciousness.

However, some scientifically credentialed individuals are making progress in this area. A fascinating collective source of this research is the conference series called Science and Non-Duality. For years, I’ve appreciated the diverse perspectives presented there.

If Dzogchen feels culturally specific to you, exploring the array of presenters at the Science and Non-Duality conferences will offer various alternatives. You’ll encounter physicists, biologists, mathematicians, psychologists, and others, many of whom share their experiences with non-dual awareness.

My favorite quantum physicist, Dr. John Hagelin from Harvard, often draws parallels between modern science and ancient scriptures, frequently inviting Tibetan lamas to share their insights.

Chapter 5: The Gifts of Awareness

Understanding the unity of space and mind reveals the essence of being.

I hesitate to voice this final point. Expecting results can create layers of complexity as you unlearn your struggles. Until you release expectations—another form of effort—avoid instructing yourself on what to seek.

However, some insights will resonate sooner than others. This realization can become another potential distraction. Becoming aware of your wholeness may lead to intriguing capabilities arising from your clarity of awareness.

Although this is happening continuously, you will begin to consciously recognize it within your material context. Accepting these insights as natural occurrences that arise and dissipate without effort is vital.

But if you start to anticipate these occurrences or seek to utilize them, you risk stalling your progression toward complete non-dual awareness. You remain within a dualistic framework, hindering your true attainment.

You might begin to experience lucid dreams or visions, or even perceive non-physical entities wishing to communicate. Many possibilities await, but refrain from clinging to them. Avoid the temptation to consider yourself special or significant for experiencing these events. Allow them to come and go without effort, and you will continue to advance.

See you on the other side.
