Unlocking Clarity: How Obsidian Helped Me Overcome Brain Fog
Written on
Chapter 1: The Struggle with Brain Fog
Brain fog is a persistent challenge for many living with chronic conditions, and I am no exception. My experiences with various physical ailments, such as the excruciating pain of arthritis, have left me grappling with daily complications. There are days when the pain is so overwhelming that I can hardly function.
Fibromyalgia adds another layer to my struggles, presenting a myriad of symptoms, including fatigue, muscle discomfort, and a mind clouded with fog. A doctor once pointedly described fibromyalgia as the medical community's way of saying, "We can’t figure out what’s wrong." This encapsulates my reality.
In addition to my physical challenges, I also navigate mental health issues, including bipolar disorder, ADHD, autism, and Dissociative Identity Disorder. Managing these conditions while trying to maintain a semblance of normalcy is exhausting.
As I approached my 50s, I became increasingly aware of how these issues were compounding. My mother’s battle with dementia served as a stark reminder of what might lie ahead for me. I knew I had to take action to improve my mental organization and overall well-being.
Section 1.1: Discovering Zettelkasten
It was during this period of introspection that I stumbled upon zettelkasten, a note-taking system that promotes effective knowledge management. I first heard about it through discussions on Roam Research, a web-based application designed for personal knowledge management.
This program allows users to create notes and form connections between disparate pieces of information. The concept of zettelkasten, which translates to "slip box" in German, has its roots in the 1500s, thanks to Swiss physician Conrad Gessner, who developed an early version of the system.
Modern iterations of this technique were influenced by sociologist Niklas Luhmann, who famously managed to generate over 90,000 index cards during his lifetime, leading to the publication of 70 books and 400 scholarly articles. His success demonstrates the potential of effective organization.
Section 1.2: A New Approach with Obsidian
After exploring various options, I discovered Obsidian.md, a powerful tool that caters to my needs. Unlike other systems that operate solely online, Obsidian allows local storage, which is essential for me, considering my rural internet connectivity challenges.
Obsidian employs Markdown language, which might seem daunting, but it's user-friendly for anyone, regardless of their tech-savviness. With this program, I could finally store and organize all the thoughts and information I had been accumulating over the years.
Chapter 2: Experience and Transformation
As I began utilizing my Obsidian Vault, I was amazed at how effectively it helped me organize my thoughts. My wife is an avid bullet journaler, and I've watched her thrive with her organizational system. Although traditional journaling doesn't suit me due to my carpal tunnel and vision challenges, Obsidian became my solution.
Initially, I wasn't sure how to approach it, but I started compiling snippets from articles and books into one central location. I had previously lost many of my stories, and I was determined not to repeat that experience. Now, my vault contains over 12 million words—stories, highlights, and personal reflections—all safely stored.
The result? A noticeable decrease in my brain fog. Over the past few months, I've experienced significant clarity. Although the fog occasionally reappears, its hold on my life has lessened, largely due to my commitment to using Obsidian daily.

The effectiveness of Obsidian has transformed my writing process, too. As a fiction writer, having a digital space to capture ideas and dialogue has been invaluable. No more searching through scattered notebooks; everything I need is neatly organized and easily accessible.
However, Obsidian isn't for everyone. My wife, despite being a meticulous planner, finds her current methods sufficient. But for individuals like me, who struggle with traditional systems, it has been a game-changer.
The modularity of Obsidian allows for plugins that further enhance its functionality. For me, it has become an essential part of my life, assisting in both organization and creativity.
