Chapter 1: The Weight of Realization
Four years ago, I found myself facing a daunting reality, akin to the Spartan Battle of Thermopylae—except instead of fighting against an enemy, I was battling the scale that read nearly 300 pounds. This was particularly disheartening for someone with a high-pressure job in a tropical climate, where even a short walk for lunch felt like an exhausting two-hour workout.
So, what was my answer? I quit my job and decided to pursue online writing—naturally. But in addition to that, I reignited my passion for the gym. I've always enjoyed working out; it combines my love for numbers with personal improvement and allows for solitary reflection. I later discovered that it serves as an incredible stress reliever that money cannot buy.
Had a rough day? A high-intensity interval training session will surely distract you from the cashier who shortchanged you after you forgot to greet her properly.
My foray into weightlifting has been a journey toward a calmer mental state—much more balanced than I've experienced in years. As of now, I weigh 215 pounds, packed with muscle and a gradually diminishing beer belly that would have given Barney Gumble a run for his money.
As time progresses, many individuals in their 30s and beyond tend to see their weight rise, a trend fueled by the diet industry's relentless marketing of quick-fix solutions:
- "Lose 50 pounds in a week with our miracle pill! It's called ipecac, and doctors don't want you to know about it!"
- "Unlock the secret to fast weight loss with our exclusive program. Become an unpaid intern at our organic holistic sweatshop retreat, and you’ll achieve your dream body!"
- "Shed pounds without exercising, counting calories, or feeling hungry. Death cures all ailments!"
I reject these companies and their deceptive practices.
Forging a New Path
I sought to create a different narrative—one that allowed me to overcome my longstanding habit of abandoning goals. In my quest to remain committed without losing sight of my objectives, I stumbled upon a few key insights that may seem obvious to others:
- Habits define who we are.
- Associating an enjoyable task with a less appealing one can significantly enhance motivation.
- Eating poorly in the morning sets a negative tone for the rest of the day.
I transformed my gym attendance into a habitual practice—not by coercing myself to go, but by focusing on how much better it made me feel mentally. I decided to only listen to podcasts while exercising. If I wanted to catch up on an episode of "Behind the Bastards," I had to walk, bike, or hit the gym.
I’m not proud to admit that I still indulge in binge eating occasionally. However, I've shifted to healthier options; a binge now consists of rice, chicken, and vegetables in copious amounts, which is significantly less caloric than my previous choices. I do miss chips, though.
Over time, these principles became ingrained in my routine. My life as a struggling writer in Asia can sometimes disrupt my healthy habits, but I've always found my way back because they’ve become a part of who I am.
Maintaining Momentum
Life changes often signal a break in our routines—starting a new job, moving houses, or flying home for an extended period can all lead to significant disruptions. However, I found a way to counteract this with a creative challenge among my friends, who share a passion for poker and beer.
During one of our gatherings, I had a lightbulb moment: why not leverage our love for gambling to enhance our health?
About four months ago, before my overdue trip home, I proposed a month-long challenge focused on calisthenics. For those unfamiliar, calisthenics involves using one’s body weight for various exercises, often accompanied by some grunting and groaning, all in pursuit of a better physique.
Initially, my proposal was met with a chorus of "No way!" as bottles flew past my head. But I quickly pivoted: "What if there was money involved?"
And thus, our challenge began.
Our Journey
The challenge started off simply but became more complex as the months progressed.
- Month 1: 40 burpees per day for 25 out of 31 days.
- Results: We quickly realized how out of shape we were. Out of six participants, only two completed the challenge. The rest of us had to pay $3 each day to those who performed better.
- Month 2: 100 pushups per day for 24 out of 30 days.
- Results: Everyone finished this round, so no money changed hands. A new question emerged: "How many pushups can you do consecutively?" I managed 65, which was quite an achievement for me.
- Month 3: We decided to expand our scope.
- Tier 1: 100 repetitions of any exercise.
- Tier 2: 200 repetitions for 20 out of 28 days.
As I write this, we're nearing the end of this competition, and I dread calculating who owes what—Excel will definitely be involved.
What’s the Real Benefit?
I can't provide specifics like how much weight someone lost or how much muscle was gained, as that’s not the essence of our initiative. The primary aim was to motivate people—particularly those aged 30 to 50 who tend to be somewhat sedentary and enjoy a drink—to start taking their health seriously again.
And there's no better motivation than a little financial incentive, which effectively linked enjoyable activities with those that are less exciting.
Our group has now grown to ten members, and we continue to expand. Some have even embarked on side bets, like achieving 100 pushups consecutively by the end of 2023, going a month without cigarettes (I'm currently in that challenge—it's tough!), and participating in a month of sobriety.
I have a strong feeling that our little exercise initiative will persist. It's enjoyable, we can banter with one another, and each week, we collectively feel a bit better physically.
And who knows? Perhaps we’ll all evolve into modern-day Spartans.
