Superhuman Abilities of Those Struggling with Addiction

Chapter 1: Understanding the Gifts of Addiction
It may come as a surprise, but individuals grappling with substance abuse possess extraordinary abilities. Society often views these individuals as fragile or afflicted, seeing them through the lens of illness or weakness. However, what if I were to say that those struggling with addiction have exceptional human traits? Indeed, they do.
What drives someone to seek solace in alcohol or drugs? These substances alter perceptions, feelings, and thoughts. They can provide relief, enhance experiences, and serve as an escape from the challenges of reality.
So, what are these individuals attempting to escape from? It boils down to emotions, sensations, and feelings. What they aim to manage or numb is, in fact, their intrinsic gift: the capacity to experience feelings deeply.
Do you realize what this implies? It signifies that we, along with those facing addiction, are in touch with our emotions. (I include myself here, having battled alcohol for two decades.)
We feel.
We are not emotionally numb. Our feelings resonate within us, influencing our responses and interactions. We are attuned to the world around us, experiencing the highs and lows, the joy and pain.
Interestingly, not everyone has access to such depth of feeling. Some live in a state of numbness without the influence of substances. I sincerely wish them well on their journey towards reconnecting with their emotions. In a world often characterized by apathy and indifference, we are different.
Those of us who turn to substances in search of relief do so because we experience life intensely. We perceive the energy coursing through our bodies. We love and hurt deeply, feeling the joy and sorrow of others around us.
We resonate with the laughter and kindness we encounter, as well as the darker emotions of jealousy and anger. We are aware of the beauty of our memories and the vibrancy of life around us.
This ability to feel is indeed a gift—a superpower that should not be overlooked. While it can sometimes feel overwhelming, this emotional sensitivity is a treasure.
In contemporary society, intellectual prowess is often prioritized over emotional intelligence. However, this perspective is flawed. Emotions are the foundation of love, art, transformation, truth, and healing. Our bodies serve as vessels for this power, and the feelings we experience can lead to profound change in the world.
Despite many of us lacking effective coping mechanisms for our feelings and sensations, some have resorted to substances to manage the intensity of our emotions. Yet, we must remember that we possess a remarkable gift: the ability to feel.
This gift requires nurturing through intentional focus, guidance, and practice. It demands our care and attention, but the superpower of emotional depth has always been within us.
How can you cultivate your superpower? How can you harness your emotional gifts for positive change? How can you learn to master your feelings effectively?
Hello, I’m Allison. I write about the journey of sobriety, sharing lessons learned, insights gained, and the beauty found amidst struggles—both from my time spent drinking and my sober days that followed.
