Prioritizing Health: A Commitment for Ourselves and Others

Chapter 1: The Importance of Health
I find myself writing this piece from the A&E department after enduring a week-long struggle to secure a GP appointment for a severe illness. Today feels like the ideal moment to discuss the significance of self-care and putting our health first.
This morning, I visited an alternative GP who expressed considerable concern about my condition. She questioned why I hadn’t contacted 999 or gone to the A&E earlier, given my breathing difficulties and other concerning symptoms. I explained my attempts to get help: several calls to 111 and a visit to a walk-in center, only to be told they were unable to accommodate me. The doctor was clearly frustrated and sent me directly to the hospital.
The reality is that while I did make attempts to seek help, I could have done more. As a single parent and someone who tends to be empathetic, I frequently put the health of others before my own. I won’t apologize for prioritizing my two children, but I must admit that I should have acted sooner. If I neglect my own well-being, how can I expect to care for them?
The GP even reminded me that we are all replaceable in our jobs, emphasizing the need to focus on our own health. Regardless of what today’s visit reveals—whether it’s a simple virus or something more serious—I’m making a commitment to prioritize my well-being moving forward. I’m documenting this pledge here as a reminder to myself.
I have two wonderful children who rely on me, a mother undergoing a hysterectomy, and another family member awaiting cervical tests, all while managing a demanding job aimed at reducing youth crime and supporting families healing from past traumas. To provide the best care for them, I must first ensure my own health is a priority. If I don’t take care of myself, I cannot offer quality support as a mother, daughter, or professional. Therefore, I’m done neglecting my health needs!
This has been a difficult lesson, one that many others could benefit from learning as well. We often acknowledge the importance of self-care but tend to overlook our health amidst life’s busyness.
Writing this has provided a valuable distraction—thank you for allowing me this space. However, I believe it's crucial for everyone to hear this message!
