Both models are equipped with Qualcomm's top-tier processor, the Snapdragon 888, and offer configurations with either 8 or 12 GB of RAM alongside storage options of 128 or 256 GB. They are both compatible with 5G networks and boast substantial batteries, along with rapid wired and wireless charging capabilities (with a wired charger included). The design and construction of both devices meet the high standards expected of smartphones nearing the €1000 price point in 2021.
Differences Between OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro
The distinctions between the OnePlus 9 and its Pro counterpart may be minimal but are quite significant. The Pro version features a slightly larger display with superior resolution and advanced display technology, plus an overall premium build quality. Additionally, the Pro model includes an adaptive refresh rate that adjusts between 1 and 120 Hz, optimizing battery efficiency throughout the day. The Pro variant is also equipped with an 8MP telephoto camera, which the standard OnePlus 9 lacks, alongside optical image stabilization and laser autofocus on the main camera, as well as IP68 certification for dust and water resistance.
OnePlus is aiming to enhance its photography capabilities this year through a partnership with the renowned Swedish brand Hasselblad, focusing on image processing and color fidelity.
Camera Capabilities: A Closer Look
Both models are equipped with impressive camera systems utilizing Sony's highly regarded sensors and image processors. The primary camera offers a resolution of 48 megapixels, while the ultrawide camera boasts 50 megapixels, complemented by a 2-megapixel sensor dedicated to depth data. The collaboration with Hasselblad has been widely discussed, although the specific benefits of this partnership remain somewhat ambiguous. OnePlus has indicated that this collaboration is set for three years, and this year’s focus appears to be on achieving more natural and realistic colors in photos through specialized image processing techniques. This is intended to move away from the sometimes artificial aesthetic commonly associated with smartphone photography, aiming instead for results akin to those produced by high-quality DSLR cameras.
The Evolving Position of OnePlus
OnePlus phones originally positioned themselves as flagship challengers, but as their prices have increased over the years, they now compete closely with offerings from Apple and Samsung. This necessitates excellence across all features. OnePlus acknowledges that to truly excel in photography and videography, they must go beyond mere marketing this year to elevate their devices to the standard of overall quality they merit. Historically, OnePlus flagships have matched competitors in performance and features while maintaining a lower price point. The Oxygen operating system, which closely resembles pure Android without being a Pixel model, is highly regarded. Factors like battery performance, wireless connectivity, and build quality are commendable. However, the camera performance has not reached the same level as the other features, and this is where OnePlus must deliver this year.
The Upcoming Launch of OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro
The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro are set to launch in Europe in April. The Pro model will be available first, starting on April 9th, priced at €1059 for the 8GB/128GB version and €1129 for the 12GB/256GB variant. The OnePlus 9 will follow on April 26th, priced at €829 (8GB/128GB) and €889 (12GB/256GB).
