Life Beyond the Smile: Navigating Life Without Teeth
Written on
Chapter 1: The Early Years
At the age of 9, my mother was informed by a dentist that the medication prescribed for my asthma had severely weakened my enamel. The prognosis was grim: I would likely need dentures by 25. Although I was advised to care for my teeth to prolong their lifespan, by 23, they began to fall out one by one, leaving me in constant discomfort. Ultimately, I opted for extraction.
Extracting my teeth turned out to be simpler than anticipated. Contrary to what I expected, the pain was manageable. However, the immediate challenge was affording dentures. The absence of teeth complicated the molding process, which made it difficult to secure a proper fit later.
Section 1.1: The Quest for Dentures
A few months post-extraction, I visited Affordable Dentures, where I learned I could obtain dentures for approximately $700. My mother generously provided the funds, but I was unaware that these were "economy" dentures and might not fit well. Additionally, I wasn't informed about a more comprehensive plan that included adjustments and permanent dentures for over $1,000. With my limited budget, I hesitated to ask my mother for more help.
Subsection 1.1.1: Struggles with Fit
For six months, I struggled to keep the bottom denture secure and learn how to eat with them. Food consistently got trapped underneath, causing discomfort due to poor fit. Despite trying to modify the dentures myself and investing additional funds into adjustments, my efforts proved futile. Eventually, I conceded defeat.
Section 1.2: Embracing a New Reality
Now, I live without teeth entirely. I found myself removing them to eat anyway, and the aesthetics of ill-fitting dentures hardly seemed worth the trouble. I figured that in the future, when finances allowed, I might seek a different dentist for better solutions. However, after a decade, I’ve lost that aspiration altogether.
Chapter 2: Eating Without Teeth
In the video "I Lost All My Teeth At 17 | SHAKE MY BEAUTY," the creator shares a personal journey through tooth loss and the emotional and physical challenges faced. This narrative resonates deeply with many who experience similar struggles.
The TEDx talk "Without Teeth | Sree Koka" explores the broader implications of living without teeth, emphasizing resilience and the human spirit's ability to adapt to life’s challenges.
Although it may seem surprising, I can still enjoy most foods, with a few exceptions like crispy fried chicken or nuts. I've adapted by using my tongue to break down food or softening it through sucking. Most importantly, my lack of teeth doesn’t hinder my ability to eat or affect my confidence. People rarely notice, and when I share my story, it rarely elicits concern. I miss certain snacks, but not enough to justify the hassle and expense of pursuing dentures again.
