In today’s digital age, children face unprecedented risks on social media. An alarming incident illustrates this: a girl met someone who claimed to be an 11-year-old boy on Roblox. He expressed a desire to connect further on Snapchat. Before proceeding, she asked him for proof of his age, which he attempted to provide by showing her videos on TikTok featuring popular games like Fortnite.

However, this was not sufficient verification. Trusting her instincts, she decided to connect with him, thinking it would be harmless. What followed was anything but harmless. While at school, the girl received a shocking image from the "boy"—a naked photo of a man, which left her and her friends horrified. This prompted immediate action: she reported the incident to her school, leading to police involvement and a complaint to Snapchat, after which her mother deleted the app. Unfortunately, the perpetrator, identified as "Ryue D" from Montreal, simply moved on to target others.

This incident highlights a grim reality: while predators have always existed, the internet has created a breeding ground for such individuals. In the past, we were aware of potentially dangerous adults in our communities, but today, children are at risk 24/7, often within the confines of their own homes.

The issue of child safety online has historically been neglected, with companies managing their platforms primarily for issues like violence and bullying. Though many organizations strive to address inappropriate content, the sheer volume of flagged material is staggering. For instance, in 2020, Facebook reported the removal of 35.9 million pieces of content linked to child sexual exploitation. Other major platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok also removed millions of posts violating child protection policies.

Despite a shift towards accountability, with some countries introducing laws that hold companies liable for illegal activities on their platforms, the problem persists. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these issues, with the UK’s Internet Watch Foundation reporting a 77% increase in self-generated abuse materials in 2020. The charity continues to receive a rising number of reports to its hotline regarding child sexual abuse.

As we navigate this perilous landscape, it becomes clear that parents must take a proactive approach. Following the incident involving my daughter’s friend, I insisted that she review every contact on her social media profiles. All her accounts are private, and our family rule is that she can only connect with individuals she knows in real life. I was relieved to confirm that all her contacts were indeed friends from her offline life.
