Growing Weirder and Wiser: Embracing Life Beyond Averages

Written on

Chapter 1: The Influence of Averages

From a young age, we are introduced to the concept of averages. It’s a fundamental lesson: the larger the group surveyed, the more representative the results. For instance, polling 1,000 individuals about their preferred ice cream flavor yields a clearer picture of society’s preferences compared to surveying just 10. This principle is foundational in statistics, which inform decisions from leadership elections to public policies. But what do these statistical trends mean for us as individuals? As we age and accumulate experiences, do we, in fact, become more average?

As children, our emotions swing dramatically from one extreme to another. Our feelings are pure and easily shifted—one moment we may be furious, the next, jubilant. Yet, as we transition into adulthood, our emotional expressions tend to become more muted. We start to conform, becoming more subdued and restrained. The vibrant, curious perspectives of childhood gradually fade. The towering buildings that once amazed us become mere structures, and the ground we walked on loses its allure. Yes, we acquire practical skills—writing emails, creating LinkedIn profiles, and managing bureaucratic tasks—but at what expense? Has mastering tax filing come at the cost of losing the joy of chasing fireflies?

It often feels like growing up means striving for a state of averageness. We smooth out our quirks, repress our emotional highs and lows, and engage in conversations about “tax exemptions” instead of sharing our dreams. Our focus shifts from celebrating life to functioning as diligent cogs in the machine. We become preoccupied with finances, neglecting the importance of being present in the moment. In our quest for normalcy, we risk losing our humanity.

However, just as children must adapt to the complexities of adulthood, adults also undergo their own transformations. By the age of forty, if we navigate life wisely, we begin to recognize that many of our past worries were inconsequential. We may realize that children often have a clearer grasp of life than we, as adults, have been willing to admit. Reflecting on the years spent measuring achievements, we learn to embrace love, creativity, and curiosity once again. The happiest among us maintain a connection to their inner child, refusing to let go of that joyful spirit. Ultimately, as we approach the end of our lives, we should strive to embrace our quirks and eccentricities. We should feel free to race down the hallways while playing the music of our youth, laughing joyfully and perhaps startling our caregivers—because life is fleeting, and settling for average is simply not worth it.
