Exploring the Art of Breathwork: A Guide to Natural Healing

Written on

Understanding Breathwork and Pranayama

My fascination with breathwork began during my yoga training, where I first encountered its healing potential. Breathwork encompasses various methods of guided breathing aimed at personal healing. In this context, Vishal Singh, a knowledgeable yoga instructor, elaborates on pranayama and its stages.

The term ‘Prana’ signifies breath, life force, or energy, while ‘Ayama’ refers to control or regulation. Thus, ‘Pranayama’ represents the controlled extension and regulation of breath. In his yoga sutras, Patanjali articulates pranayama as the mindful inhalation and exhalation of breath while maintaining a stable posture.

Through the practice of pranayama, individuals can cultivate emotional control, leading to enhanced stability, focus, and mental clarity. Pranayama is generally categorized into three primary phases:

  1. Puraka (Inhalation)
  2. Rechaka (Exhalation)
  3. Kumbhaka (Retention), which can be further divided into:
    • Antara Kumbhaka (retention after inhalation)
    • Bahya Kumbhaka (retention after exhalation)

According to Paramhansa Yogananda, breath retention should never reach the point of discomfort. Holding breath too long can lead to increased pressure in the veins, potentially damaging the lungs and heart. Therefore, it's crucial to practice yogic breathing exercises slowly and calmly.

Start by inhaling gradually while counting mentally, filling the lungs comfortably. For instance, if you inhale over six counts, hold for six, and exhale for six. Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth, repeating this cycle twelve to twenty-four times before meditation.

“Everything should be done with peace. That is the best medicine for body, mind, and soul.” — Paramhansa Yogananda

A beneficial routine involves performing this exercise twelve times, three times daily, preferably outdoors. Maintaining good posture—shoulders back and chest out—is essential for effective breathing throughout the day. Detailed guidance for these practices can be found in Yogananda’s Raja Yoga lessons.

The first video, "Pranayama - An Introduction | Breathing Basics | Yoga With Aj," provides foundational insights into the practice of pranayama. It serves as an excellent starting point for anyone looking to deepen their understanding of breathwork.

Integrating Breathwork with Meditation

Lanc Vol emphasizes the synergy between breathwork and meditation. Breathwork not only enhances concentration but also fosters mindfulness. Though breathwork can be practiced at any time, it acts as a catalyst for meditation, making it more accessible.

Breathwork can facilitate relaxation, mental clarity, and focus, offering immediate benefits. However, meditation stands out as a profound practice for redirecting energy and achieving deeper mental and physical balance over time.

Seema Mehr highlights a common challenge: maintaining focus during breathwork can be difficult, as distracting thoughts and emotions often surface. Furthermore, longer and deeper breaths may cause discomfort for some, potentially leading to fear regarding the emotional releases that can occur during practice.

The Benefits of Breathwork

Engaging in slow, deep, meditative breathing can significantly lower stress levels and blood pressure without any negative side effects.

“If you believe it can help, it's worth trying.”

Enhancing Your Walking Routine

Incorporating breathwork into your walking routine can elevate your energy levels and alleviate stress.
