Chapter 1: The Essence of Living Fully

“Doesn’t everything eventually fade away too soon? Tell me, what do you intend to do with your one wild and precious life?” — Mary Oliver

When Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Mary Oliver penned those lines, she likely didn’t anticipate their immense impact on the self-improvement community. Today, they resonate across various platforms—books, social media memes, and even professional networks like LinkedIn. Many of us strive to live meaningfully and make the most of our limited time.

However, in 2022, achieving this goal can feel daunting amidst life’s chaos. For numerous individuals, simply surviving each day often takes precedence over truly thriving within them. Therefore, it is essential to keep our aspirations realistic.

When Life Feels Blurred

Most people don’t spring out of bed, fueled with enthusiasm. Instead, a sense of overwhelm often accompanies the morning alarm. It’s perfectly normal; each person has their own rhythm and challenges. The key is to ensure we wake up completely, avoiding a monotonous succession of blurry days, which can lead to a lackluster existence.

Here’s a pragmatic approach to truly appreciating your life—not merely surviving the days but genuinely feeling alive within them.

> “If you don’t live the only life you have, you won’t live any life at all.” — James Baldwin

1. Ground Yourself to Elevate

Many individuals grappling with anxiety or depression describe feelings of disconnection and confusion. The antidote is grounding yourself, achievable through establishing a daily routine.

I don’t suggest extensive morning rituals; most of us barely have time for a simple breakfast. Instead, find one consistent activity that anchors you, whether it’s making your bed, enjoying a cup of tea, practicing a few yoga poses, or taking a brief walk. This practice will help you feel stable and prepared for whatever the day may hold.

As author J.R. Rim aptly states: “Flying starts from the ground. The more grounded you are, the higher you fly.”

2. Release the Tension

Many people constantly operate in a state of anxiety, their minds never at rest, which adversely affects their mental well-being. To truly live, it’s crucial to let go of that tension. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly.

I once worked with a woman determined to lose weight. Despite previous efforts yielding fleeting success, she struggled to maintain her progress. When we first met, her jaw was clenched tight, reflecting her internal struggle. The more she focused on how difficult it was to reach her goal, the more obstacles she created. Achieving your goals becomes easier with consistent routines and a patient mindset.

3. Doubts Are Normal, But Act Anyway

Shakespeare reminds us, “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.”

We all experience doubts, and that’s not the issue. The challenge arises when these doubts fuel insecurity, leading to inaction. Overcoming those doubts to engage in activities that challenge you—no matter how small—will empower you and make you feel alive.

4. Invest Fully in Your Relationships

We recognize that social connections benefit our psychological health. However, true richness comes from deeper bonds. As author Anthony Liccione states, “It’s not how many friends you can count, it’s how many of those you can count on.”

Let’s take it further: it’s also about how many friends can rely on you to be fully present. I once assisted a young woman struggling in her relationship, who described herself as having “one foot in.” This metaphor resonated with me; you cannot cultivate intimacy while only partially engaged. If you choose to be with someone, commit wholeheartedly. This is where joy resides.

5. Let Your Heart Lead

Minister Norman Vincent Peale, a pioneer in the self-help movement, said, “Throw your heart over the bar and your body will follow.”

This quote resonates deeply. Allow your heart to guide you—not blindly, but in ways that resonate with you. When you invest your heart in something, it brings you joy and fulfillment. Whether it’s work, a hobby, or a cause, pursuing your passions helps you feel more alive.

Consider this: have you tucked your heart away, or have you tossed it over the bar, allowing it to soar?
