Embracing Balance: Escaping the Healing Trap

Chapter 1: Understanding Inner Healing
In recent years, terms like inner healing, holistic healing, and self-healing have gained significant popularity. If you've explored these topics, you may have encountered the concept of "doing the inner work." This process can often feel challenging and overwhelming. It involves addressing childhood wounds and confronting traumas and painful memories repeatedly, aiming to lessen the pain or transform it entirely.
Accepting our negative traits and embracing our shadow selves is part of this journey. I spent two years entrenched in this cycle, which initially brought me a lot of discomfort. However, as time passed, that pain turned into acceptance, ultimately leading to a sense of peace. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who feels emotionally stable to embark on this introspective journey.
Yet, I eventually found it necessary to do the opposite. It was time to halt the relentless soul-searching and deep introspection. The insights and lessons I gained from this process were invaluable; they equipped me with tools to manage difficult emotions and increased my self-confidence. Nonetheless, it is all too easy to fall into a perpetual cycle of healing, continually digging up subconscious wounds. This cycle can persist throughout our lives, regardless of our intentions.
While healing from emotional burdens is essential and rewarding, it's crucial to avoid getting trapped in a continuous loop of inner work. This phenomenon is what I refer to as the "healing trap." Being ensnared in this cycle leads to an excessive focus on past experiences. Although releasing old traumas is a lifelong endeavor, finding a healthy balance is key.
I recognized that fixating on the past was hindering my mental well-being. To break free, I shifted my focus and began to savor everyday life, reaping the rewards of my previous efforts. Experiencing less anxiety and ceasing comparisons to others felt like a tremendous victory, allowing me to embrace a state of carefree living.
When constantly consumed by what needed to be healed next, I found it impossible to be fully present with my current self. The more I engaged in healing, the more I unearthed new aspects of myself to work on, leading me to question whether this was truly the right path. I yearned to be present and enjoy the flow of daily life that I had worked diligently to cultivate.
Taking a break from shadow work allowed me to recognize and appreciate the substantial progress I had made over the past two years. During the throes of that work, I often overlooked my achievements. It wasn't until I stepped back that I could truly admire my growth.
If you have also navigated a long and arduous healing journey, I encourage you to take a step back occasionally and appreciate the emotional milestones you've reached. Our healing journeys will continue throughout our lives, but they don't have to be the sole focus.
