Chapter 1: Taking Charge of Your Life
It's crucial to actively shape your life rather than simply going along with what fate has in store for you.
This should be a straightforward piece of advice. Ensure that you pursue the life you desire rather than the one that merely unfolds before you.
Not everyone recognizes this, however. Recently, during a reflective journaling session, I came to a realization. At the age of 36, I felt that all my aspirations had vanished due to age and family responsibilities. I imagined I would never have the opportunity to experience life in a cozy Manhattan studio, immersed in second-hand literature, enjoying inexpensive meals, and seeking inspiration.
Additionally, financial concerns loomed large in my mind, as did the growing needs of my mother. I felt as if my life had reached a standstill at a mere 36 years old. Regret flooded my thoughts: If only I had been more adventurous in my youth!
How many of you can relate to the feeling of missing out on significant experiences—be it opportunities, relationships, or even phases of life? Many of you likely do.
This mindset can trap you in a cycle of stagnation. You are no longer the person you once were, nor the one you envision becoming. You may convince yourself that due to past decisions, you are forever barred from pursuing your dreams. Living this way is draining, and prolonged exposure can invite feelings of depression.
"According to the National Science Foundation, our brains can generate around 50,000 thoughts each day, with 95% of those thoughts recurring. You have the power to shape your thoughts, which, in turn, influence your beliefs and ultimately form your mindset." — The Impact of Limiting Beliefs, Wharton Magazine
I had been caught in this mindset for some time, but during that morning of journaling, a memory surfaced. I recalled a friend who, at age 30, felt trapped in a similar way. She believed she was too old to travel, change careers, or even find a suitable partner. It all sounded ludicrous to me then.
However, a breakthrough emerged. My dissatisfaction with life stemmed not from a lack of possibilities but from my own inaction. I had been holding myself back, consistently opting for what seemed "responsible" rather than what truly excited me.
I realized that going to New York for a few months was entirely feasible. I could occasionally indulge myself. Life was not over, nor is it ever truly over unless you make that choice.
That moment shifted everything for me.
In just a few weeks, I have: - Invested in a fourth property. My husband and I have become part-time property investors, and we’re in the process of acquiring a two-bedroom apartment in a new development. - Launched a paid version of my newsletter. The One-Person Business Success newsletter, aimed at solopreneurs earning under $100K annually, has been steadily growing since June. I distill the wisdom of industry leaders to help others build profitable solo ventures. - Started socializing more. I used to fret about leaving my husband with the kids, but they thrive together. Now, I enjoy bar quizzes with my friends almost every Tuesday.
These changes have greatly improved my well-being, boosting my confidence and altering how I tackle my goals.
You might find yourself telling a different narrative—perhaps that you’re too old, too young, or lacking in time or resources. You might worry about what others think.
The reality is, opportunities exist at any age, and you can always discover the time and resources you need. Don’t be your own roadblock.
You will regret it if you do.
Final Thoughts
This may seem like common knowledge, yet it’s often overlooked. If you find yourself settling for anything in life, make a change. Don’t wait for circumstances to shift on their own. You deserve to live the life you envision, one that aligns with your values and dreams.
