Embracing Change: My Journey Beyond the White Coat

Chapter 1: From Aspirations to Realities
When I was a child, my father posed a simple question: what did I envision for my future? My response was a straightforward desire to become a doctor. My parents exchanged knowing looks. My father remarked, “Why would anyone aspire to anything less noble? Other careers seem merely profit-driven.”
Years later, at sixteen, I faced the same inquiry. I repeated my childhood ambition, but this time, my mother interjected. “Medicine is tough. Choose something easier.” My father countered, “If she wishes to pursue medicine, let her do it.”
My mother had a point. Gaining admission to medical school was a daunting task with high cut-off scores. I faced multiple attempts before finally securing a spot. However, the struggle didn’t end there; the relentless exams posed an ongoing challenge, with many students frequently resitting tests.
Surprisingly, during my toughest moments in medical school, it was my mother who provided unwavering support. After graduating about 15 years ago, I aimed for a career in public health, leading me to pursue a master’s degree in that field. What happened to my unyielding dream of being a physician?
While in medical school, I began exploring entrepreneurial ventures. Inspired by my mother, who was an entrepreneur, I sometimes helped market her products while juggling my studies and first job. I dabbled in selling various items on the side, gradually shifting my focus away from solely being a physician.
Upon obtaining my master’s, I realized my career could take diverse directions. This became evident when I joined a start-up wellness clinic as a team leader. My employer made it clear that my role extended beyond patient care; I was expected to contribute to the business's growth through marketing efforts.
Within two years, I experienced significant personal and professional growth, acquiring skills I hadn’t anticipated learning in medical training. The realization dawned on me that there was a vast world beyond the confines of a physician’s office.
To promote our services and enhance our brand visibility, my team and I ventured into graphic design. When we fell short, we enlisted graphic artists. We quickly became proficient in executing social media campaigns. Some days were dedicated to crafting proposals or designing promotional materials, while others revolved around business pitches or vendor bids. The demands of working in a start-up were relentless.
After two transformative years, I chose to migrate to North America. By then, my perspective had broadened; I understood that I could forge a path beyond medicine.
In my first year abroad, I explored multi-level marketing. The following year, I enrolled in a health informatics course, and the subsequent year, I pursued studies in clinical research and mental health.
One day, my father called to urge me not to abandon my medical aspirations, reminding me of the sacrifices made along the way. That advice lingered in my mind.
Today, I run a small business specializing in aloe vera skincare and wellness products. Additionally, I engage a currency trading company to manage cryptocurrency investments, earning bonuses weekly averaging between 2-3%. This month, I initiated the distribution of new health products to distributors and continue to write weekly on this platform. Who knew that non-medical professions could hold such value?
In my 9-to-5 role, I assist a family physician. Much of my work involves administrative tasks, but I also engage in clinical discussions with him, knowing I’ll return to practicing medicine soon.
When I have children, I won’t steer them away from their chosen paths. Instead, I’ll share with them that life often presents unexpected twists and turns.
“Those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything.”
