Unlocking Mental Health: 3 Surprising Tips for Quick Improvement

Chapter 1: The Importance of Mental Health
Mental wellness is essential.
Despite its significance, discussions around mental health are surprisingly rare. I recall a moment at a party when I mentioned my therapy sessions, and a guy jokingly questioned what was wrong with me. His humor, however, masked a deeper truth.
Neglecting mental health can lead to procrastination, dissatisfaction, diminished self-worth, and even depressive episodes. How do I know this?
For years, I’ve meticulously crafted my environment, habits, and systems. Yet, whenever my mental health declines, my overall happiness and productivity follow suit. Taking care of your mental well-being is not just advisable; it’s vital and will yield significant benefits.
Here are three highly effective yet often overlooked strategies:
Tip #1: Let Go of Mental Health Obsession
This may sound counterintuitive.
When we’re feeling low, it can dominate our thoughts. “I’m having a terrible day. I lack energy. I feel like a failure. My cat made a mess on my pillow.” Identifying too closely with these struggles won’t alleviate them.
When you label a day as bad, even minor annoyances become magnified—like a bird dropping on your head or losing a client.
However, if you stop fixating on your challenges, those same incidents can turn into mere annoyances—an odd situation to chuckle about or a chance to redirect your focus toward new projects.
I've learned that even during tough times, it’s crucial to balance acknowledging your feelings and pushing through tasks.
Feel sad, jot down your dark thoughts, and allow yourself moments of self-pity. Then, proceed with your responsibilities:
- Take a brief walk in nature
- Check off a simple task from your to-do list
- Move your body to generate energy and momentum
As the saying goes, where attention goes, energy flows.

Tip #2: Focus on Actions, Not Feelings
Many people misunderstand motivation.
They believe that feelings must precede action, which is a misconception. I assure you, every individual who has achieved something significant has experienced days when they didn’t feel like doing anything. They pushed through, regardless of feeling tired, hungover, or heartbroken.
When you start taking action, something remarkable occurs.
You generate motivation through your deeds. Completing even the smallest task triggers a "proud of me" feedback loop, fostering more motivation.
This article itself is a testament—I didn’t feel like writing today. But rather than giving in, I planted myself in front of my computer and typed one sentence. Then another, and another.
You don’t need to make monumental changes every day. Yet, taking any action is better than remaining inactive. It will propel you forward and inspire you.
Ask yourself: “What’s a small action I can take? What minor accomplishment would uplift my spirits?” As Tony Robbins famously stated, “Progress equals happiness.”
It’s perfectly acceptable to feel down, but don’t allow yourself to remain stuck.
Tip #3: Acknowledge That Feeling Bad Is Normal
Regardless of how you feel, you are not at fault.
I understand the feeling of scrolling through social media and seeing others seemingly thriving—traveling, earning money, and enjoying perfect relationships—while you may feel isolated and lost. I’ve felt like a failure too. Throughout this, I’ve grasped two key insights:
- No one is perpetually happy. What you see are merely highlight reels. People rarely share their struggles or moments of despair.
- Experiencing sadness is a natural aspect of life. You are human, not a machine, and it’s normal to encounter negative emotions—they often highlight areas needing attention.
However, our egos resist this reality, seeking to shield us from the discomfort of feeling down. This often leads to self-judgment.
So what if you didn’t rise early? So what if you didn’t meet all your goals? So what if you didn’t have a stellar day?
Life is meant to be challenging at times.
Embracing this truth can liberate you.
