The Surprising Benefits of Playing Rocket League
Written on
The Impact of Video Games and Technology
Technology significantly influences cognitive development, benefiting not just children but adults as well. One game that has captured attention globally since its launch in 2015 is Rocket League. Known for its unique blend of soccer and vehicular mayhem, it has become a cultural phenomenon, particularly in the United States.
As a parent of a gaming-enthusiast son, I found Rocket League to be a blessing. While I generally oppose addiction, this game stands out as a positive exception. In this article, I will explore Rocket League’s value through the perspectives of players, tech enthusiasts, and educators.
A Personal Journey in Gaming
My passion for game design began in the early '90s while I delved into robotics and artificial intelligence, alongside my studies in cognitive science. Despite my enthusiasm, the technological limitations of that era hindered my ability to fully realize my creative ideas. Although I enjoyed gaming, I remained an amateur player who advocated for the cognitive benefits of video games.
My son's interest in gaming reignited my own passion, leading me to support his development in this area. I observed remarkable advancements in his cognitive abilities, including coordination skills and the sheer joy of playing.
The Cognitive Benefits of Gaming
From a cognitive standpoint, video games like Rocket League can greatly affect brain development. The rise of eSports has made competitive gaming even more popular. Rocket League, which integrates cars into a soccer-like environment, has drawn millions of players worldwide. The game experienced a dip in popularity between 2019 and 2020 but surged again after being acquired by Epic Games and released as a free-to-play title.
This engaging game allows players to compete in teams on a global scale. It offers a third-person perspective where players control cars that can jump, flip, and even drive on walls. With its G-rating, it appeals to a wide age range, particularly those between 13 and 25.
The Thrill of Competition
Rocket League uniquely combines fun and competition, enabling players to gradually improve their skills as they strive for higher rankings. The game incentivizes achievement through awards and recognition, including league trophies and cash prizes. Recently, I was thrilled to see Team BDS win the European championship.
As we look ahead, the North American championship is set to begin on February 27 and will be livestreamed on Twitch, offering fans a chance to catch the action live.
Community and Content Creation
In the eSports realm, well-known teams such as NRG and Team BDS dominate the scene. Fans of FIFA, F1, NBA, and Madden will likely find enjoyment in Rocket League as well. The game has also garnered significant attention on platforms like YouTube, where many creators produce specialized content. Based on my son's recommendations, I've discovered several channels featuring talented YouTubers, such as amustycow and SunlessKhan.
Broader Benefits Beyond Gaming
Beyond mere entertainment, I’ve observed personal growth in my son through gaming. For instance, his piano skills improved dramatically after playing Rocket League, showcasing enhanced learning abilities and increased confidence.
During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Rocket League became a lifeline for countless children, including my son, providing joy during a challenging time. Through gaming, he learned to set SMART goals—specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely—which have translated into academic and life successes.
Mental Health and Cognitive Reserves
I also want to address the mental health implications of gaming. In an earlier article, I discussed the role of cognitive reserves in combating dementia. Video games like Rocket League can serve as valuable tools for enhancing these reserves, contributing to brain health.
The formation of new brain cells and dense dendrites aids attention, memory, and hand-eye coordination, all critical components of cognitive reserves.
