Streamlining Your Day with the Elgato Stream Deck

Chapter 1: Embracing Automation
If you've followed my previous posts, you might already know how passionate I am about automation.
Stop Wasting Time and Start Automating
Automation can significantly alleviate the burden of daily tasks, whether it’s using various applications to handle files or simply asking “Alexa” to manage the lights or play music. Recently, I discovered the Elgato Stream Deck, a versatile device designed with gamers and streamers in mind. Although I don't fit into either category, I quickly recognized its potential to enhance my daily routines.
At its core, the Stream Deck consists of programmable keys that function as shortcuts. This allows you to execute repetitive tasks or initiate a series of actions with just one command. Most of us are familiar with basic shortcuts like CTRL+C for copying and CTRL+V for pasting. Many applications also have their unique shortcuts to streamline tasks. The Stream Deck enables you to customize buttons for these functions, making it a valuable tool for anyone with repetitive workflows.
I opted for the 6-button version of the Stream Deck. While it may seem limited, you can create multiple profiles, each containing several pages of functions. It’s compact and fits neatly beneath my monitor.
Programming the keys is straightforward. For instance, I set up a shortcut that allows me to switch to my browser with a single button press, no matter what I'm doing. For a slightly more complex function, I programmed a button to control my lamp, which is connected to a smart socket. While I usually ask Alexa to operate it, integrating IFTTT enables me to control the lamp directly through the Stream Deck.
One of my primary motivations for acquiring the Stream Deck was to manage Google Meet video calls more efficiently. Since we rely on Google Meet for daily meetings, having quick access to control the microphone and camera is crucial. With the Stream Deck, I can manage these functions without needing to find the correct tab, even if I'm focused on another screen. There’s also a compatible app for Zoom.
So far, so good. However, I took it a step further by creating a multi-step button that performs several actions with one click. For instance, when I have a one-on-one meeting with a colleague, I need to open a document in notes, add the person's name, and include the relevant headings. With just one button press, I can launch Apple Notes, generate a new note, and run an Alfred action to capture the person's name, ensuring every note is formatted consistently.
Some may argue this is just laziness, but I find it saves time, which accumulates over days and weeks.
In my current setup with the 6-button Mini version, I’ve had to be strategic. On my home screen, I have buttons for quickly adding tasks in Todoist, opening the Work profile, accessing the Media profile, and controlling the lamp.
The “Work” profile includes:
- Google Meet controls
- A browser switcher
- Links to trigger Slack or Todoist
- A shortcut for quickly adding tasks
The “Media” profile features a button for Apple Music, playback controls, and access to video streaming applications. Additionally, each layout includes a button to return to the home screen or navigate back.
Looking back, I wish I had chosen the 15-button version; perhaps I’ll upgrade in the future. I had a great time designing custom icons for the buttons using Canva. While the Stream Deck offers various icon packs, creating my own added a personal touch.
This device isn't a necessity, but it certainly adds a bit of fun to an otherwise standard workspace. If you’re exploring a clever method to integrate shortcuts into your workflow, saving precious seconds and enjoying the process, the Stream Deck is worth considering.
