Revitalizing Old Aspirations: Overcoming the Algorithm Dilemma

Chapter 1: Rediscovering My Ambitions
Recently, I was reminded of a past goal that once excited me. Not long ago, I enrolled in a coding bootcamp, eager to dive into the world of programming. I dedicated around six hours daily to learning as much as I could before the course began, hoping to gain a competitive edge.
It's often said that entering the tech field with a specific problem to solve can enhance your learning experience and motivation. My objective was clear: I aimed to create a community website as my capstone project before the course concluded.
Although the bootcamp experience fell short of expectations, my desire to foster a community remains strong. I envision a space where individuals can thrive, express themselves, and grow together. Now, I just need to rethink my approach since the bootcamp didn’t deliver as promised. Overcoming my disappointment, I am ready to revisit and refine my goal.
Shifting My Focus
Instead of posting daily on Medium, I’ve decided to transition to sharing content a few times a week.
While I cherish my time on Medium and the fantastic connections I’ve made, the platform's algorithm has been disappointing lately. I often can’t see the updates from the writers I admire (thank goodness for email notifications!). If I’m having difficulty seeing their work, it’s likely that my readers are experiencing the same issue.
This brings me to a pressing question: Why am I paying for this service? I appreciate that my membership grants me access to a wealth of content, but I wish my financial contribution directly benefited the creators I enjoy.
I can't afford to support everyone financially, but I want my limited resources to support the individuals and projects that matter to me.
Exploring Alternatives
I understand the appeal of Medium—it offers an extensive library of content for a small fee, along with opportunities to write for various publications. However, if my posts are only receiving a handful of views, it might be more effective to explore multiple platforms to expand my audience. Currently, Medium doesn’t seem to be the best option on its own.
For those with limited budgets, the ability to pay once and access everything can be attractive, making Medium a decent starting point. However, I wish there were a way to support writers directly, rather than funneling money into a large corporation that doesn’t seem to prioritize my preferred creators.
I may not have enough disposable income to donate to every writer, but I would consider contributing a small amount to a few of them rather than a faceless corporation that struggles to address its issues.
I’ve been contemplating tiered systems and optional donations, inspired by several talented individuals I follow who have discussed passive income in their articles. Their insights have prompted me to delve deeper into this topic.
The Plan
Going forward, I intend to continue publishing on Medium, but it will no longer be my sole focus. I plan to save some of my work for other platforms, hoping this approach will ease my writing process. The recent frustrations with bugs on Medium have somewhat dampened my enthusiasm for writing.
