From Gmail to Apple Mail: My Surprising Return to the Default App

Written on

Chapter 1: The Gmail Obsession

In today's digital landscape, Gmail reigns supreme as the most widely used email service globally. Despite many users clinging to long-standing accounts with providers like Yahoo, iCloud, or AOL, the allure of creating a Google account for services such as YouTube or Google Docs is undeniable.

It's no surprise that 90% of the emails in my inbox come from Gmail accounts. This service has become so entrenched in our tech habits that I, too, have maintained my Gmail account for over a decade, even as I remain in my early twenties.

I can't deny it — Gmail offers impressive features, functionality, and a gateway to all things Google. Its engaging animations captivated me to the point where I removed the seemingly mundane Apple Mail app from my device. Little did I realize that Apple Mail prioritized utility over aesthetic appeal.

Fast forward, and I relied solely on Gmail for all my emailing needs, exchanging countless messages. Then came WWDC 21, where Apple unveiled iCloud+. At that moment, I felt satisfied with my free 5 GB plan, so I ignored the new features that came with the upgrade.

However, the end of complimentary Google Photos storage prompted me to explore iCloud+ more seriously.

Section 1.1: Why Upgrade to iCloud+?

iCloud+ offers features that are hard to ignore, leaving me genuinely impressed.

The "Hide My Email" function piqued my curiosity with its intriguing name, available exclusively for iCloud+ users through the default Mail app. I found myself reinstalling Apple Mail, half-expecting a return to the dull experience I previously had.

To my surprise, I rediscovered the value of Apple Mail, and it quickly became my preferred email solution once again. The integration with iOS and Apple's commitment to privacy and security made a compelling case for switching back.

Gmail, while visually appealing, lacks the robust filtering options that Apple Mail provides. As Kristina God notes, Gmail's reliance on trackers allows senders to monitor whether their emails are opened or links clicked, creating an uncomfortable experience. Apple’s simple approach fundamentally challenges this ad-driven model.

Apple Mail vs Gmail: Privacy and Utility

Section 1.2: Embracing the "Hide My Email" Feature

Apple's "Hide My Email" feature is an underutilized gem that lets users create an unlimited number of temporary email addresses that forward messages to their personal inbox. This capability allows users to maintain anonymity online, making it perfect for newsletters, online sign-ups, or even playful emails to friends.

Looking back, I regret leaving Apple Mail behind for its unassuming appearance. Its utility far outweighs its lack of glamour, and I am now glad to have returned.

Chapter 2: The Apple Ecosystem Advantage

The first video discusses a common issue with the Catalina 10.15.7 update, highlighting how accountsd can spike CPU usage when using iCloud. This insight could be beneficial for those facing similar problems.

The second video shares essential tips and tricks for getting the most out of the Apple Watch Series 8, guiding new users through the top features to explore.

In conclusion, as an Apple user, I’ve come to appreciate the emphasis on privacy and security that Apple Mail provides. While Gmail may be visually appealing, it cannot compete with the reliability of Apple Mail. For anyone considering a switch back, I wholeheartedly recommend it.
