The Tragic Story of Omayra Sanchez: A Photographic Legacy
Written on
In 1985, the Nevado del Ruiz volcano in Colombia erupted after nearly seven decades of dormancy. This catastrophic event led to the loss of over 23,000 lives and devastated 14 villages, with the town of Armero suffering particularly severe damage. Many structures, including homes, roads, and bridges, were obliterated, leaving only a few survivors.
Among the victims was thirteen-year-old Omayra Sanchez Garzon, who became trapped beneath the rubble of her home. For three days, she remained immobilized and submerged in water. Despite numerous attempts by rescue workers, they were unable to extricate her. One rescuer swam down to assess the situation, discovering she was wedged between rocks and the bodies of others.
The rescuers managed to free her up to her waist but faced the grim reality that any additional force could lead to broken legs. Omayra was ensnared in concrete and mud, with her legs pinned beneath a brick door and held by her deceased aunt. As the water level continued to rise, a tire was placed around her to prevent drowning.
