Chapter 1: Introduction to Efficient Research
Hello! I'm Axel, a psychologist, data analyst, and PhD candidate specializing in Computational and Comparative Neuroscience. One of the most essential tasks during research is reading and studying academic papers. Unfortunately, the process of finding relevant scientific literature can often be challenging and time-consuming.
In this article, I will introduce you to a website that streamlines this process, potentially saving you several hours each week.
Section 1.1: Contexts for Researching Papers
When searching for academic papers, there are typically two primary reasons for doing so:
- To deepen your understanding of a particular subject.
- To find studies that replicate previous research.
In the first scenario, you might look for review articles that summarize the latest findings, the current state of research, and identify gaps within the field. The second scenario involves investigating studies that have employed the same methodologies to verify existing results.
While these tasks may appear straightforward, they can consume several hours of your time. But fear not, as there is a website that can simplify this process.
Section 1.2: Discovering Research Rabbit
Research Rabbit is an innovative discovery tool designed to help you find related papers based on the ones you already have. For instance, if I am exploring literature on animal consciousness, I would start by searching on platforms like Google Scholar, Scopus, or ResearchGate. After saving a few relevant papers in my Zotero library, I turn to Research Rabbit.
To begin, I create a new collection by pressing the "+collection" button. I can then add papers by inputting their DOI or title, making it incredibly user-friendly.
After adding a paper, I can view various options such as related studies and citations. If I want to see who cited a particular paper, I simply click on "All Citations," which presents a visually engaging graph.
Chapter 2: Enhancing Productivity with Zotero Integration
Connecting Research Rabbit to your Zotero database elevates this tool even further. If you haven't yet adopted Zotero, I highly recommend it. This tool allows you to store, organize, and manage your academic references efficiently.
To integrate the two, click the import button at the top left of the Research Rabbit interface, log in to your Zotero account, and grant the necessary permissions. Once synced, every new paper added to Research Rabbit will automatically be stored in your Zotero library.

A 2017 study published in ElSevier indicates that half of PhD students suffer from psychological distress, with one-third at risk of a psychiatric condition due to workload and organizational stress. Therefore, optimizing your academic workflow to automate and simplify tasks is crucial during your PhD journey.
