Palliation

Palliation stands as my latest grayscale creation and also my most poignant piece. Addressing the struggles faced by the elderly in underfunded nursing homes necessitated a photograph that encapsulated this sentiment.

The image I selected caught my attention due to the tears welling in the elderly man's eyes and the age spots on his forehead that starkly illustrate the passage of time. The inclusion of a magnifying glass adds an artistic layer, inviting various interpretations.

Is he scrutinizing a judgmental society? Or is someone else forcing the lens to his eye?

Interestingly, there’s been some discussion regarding the use of grayscale images on this platform. Some editors discourage writers from utilizing classic black-and-white photographs in their submissions.

I’ve opted for grayscale title images in six of my poems, and four of them have been recognized!

Motherboard

For a narrative-focused poem like Motherboard, I required three visuals: an arresting title image, a second to break up two substantial stanzas, and a final one to conclude powerfully.

The image above serves as the second visual, positioned between the stanzas. It embodies a sci-fi, dystopian essence that aligns perfectly with the poem's theme. The model's pose, illuminated by an eerie blue light, offers a captivating portrayal of technological veneration in a future landscape.

All visuals in this poem contribute to the overarching narrative of artificial intelligence's encroachment on humanity.

While I hope such a future never materializes, the unsettling progress in AI provides rich material for creative exploration. I’ve penned nine poems centered around AI, with many more on the horizon!

Wolf

Wolf addresses the sensitive topic of domestic violence. It’s raw and unfiltered, necessitating a title image that balances brutality with vulnerability.

Camila Aguiar ranks among my favorite photographers on Pexels, and although she has a limited collection, I’ve utilized all of her images. This particular shot stands out for many reasons.

The wolfish finger on the model's lips is mesmerizing, while the nose ring exudes defiance. In my interpretation, the eye makeup and glazed lenses reflect her trance-like state as she finds herself ensnared by a literal wolf in a figurative toxic relationship.

I initially feared this image might hinder my chances for recognition due to its provocative nature, but I’m thrilled that Medium’s curation team acknowledged its significance to the narrative.

The more awareness we raise about domestic violence, the better.

Oracle

This image captures a standoff between a powerful woman adorned in an intricately detailed sari and her five mythical deities, all poised for battle against an unseen adversary.

At least, that’s how I interpret this visual.

Oracle delves into an artificial intelligence learning model, gradually awakening as a sentient being, breaking free from its algorithmic confines and its human overseer.

In my view, the unseen force represents the learning model, and what stands out to me about this image is the cloaked woman in the center. Her vulnerability adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.

Additionally, the raspberry-red hues are simply stunning!

Rave

When crafting a poem centered around raves, it was essential to include visuals that resonate with that vibrant atmosphere! I sought images that were bright, ethereal, and filled with a sense of positivity.

I penned this poem shortly after the Israel-Gaza conflict intensified, making it more than just a celebration of partying; it serves as a tribute to unity and the innate human desire for connection. At a rave, differences in ethnicity and religion fade as people dance together.

I incorporated four images throughout this poem, and the third image below particularly caught my eye due to its stylish aesthetics and spiritual essence.

Golden Supernova

I’ve reserved my favorite image for last. Is there a more perfect free-to-use image available online? The lion-like contact lenses, the tribal yellow face paint, the muscles—the muscles!

Numerous images of this model exist (I utilized three for this poem), and each one is beautifully captured with remarkable angles. Each photo tells its own story, and the above title image has universal appeal.

It could effectively headline fiction, memoirs, travel narratives, health and fitness articles, or even historical accounts (Golden Supernova explores themes of reincarnation and Ancient Egypt, making it an excellent fit!).

As a Caucasian writer, I strive to include visuals of individuals from diverse backgrounds whenever appropriate. Representation is vital.
