Your Life Is a Public Toilet (Respectfully): Embrace Accountability for Your Future Self

Written on

Chapter 1: A Messy Reality

Imagine a man who puts a coin into the slot of a public restroom, only to find himself in a less-than-pleasant situation. He enters and misses the toilet seat, creating quite a mess. If he were in the comfort of his own home, he would likely take responsibility and clean it up. Instead, he thinks, “It’s not my responsibility; someone else will handle it.”

After finishing his business, he leaves without a second thought, never intending to return. Soon after, another person steps in, appalled by the mess left behind. Rather than addressing it, they echo the first man's thoughts: “It’s not my job.” They too make a quick exit, leaving the restroom in worse shape than before.

This pattern continues, much like how many of us procrastinate in our daily lives.

“I can handle that later; I’m too busy right now.”

“I’ll take care of it tomorrow; I just can’t deal with it today.”

“That’s a problem for future me.”

These excuses mirror the thoughts of our restroom users. By delaying tasks, we not only ensure they remain undone but also contribute to the chaos in our lives—similar to the state of that public restroom.

So, let’s stop treating life like a communal toilet! By cultivating discipline and improving time management, you can accomplish your tasks, and your future self will be grateful for it.
