Keeping Your Head Above Water: Small Tips for Life's Challenges

Written on

Chapter 1: The Struggles of Everyday Life

Life can often feel overwhelming, much like trying to stay afloat in deep waters.

I must admit, while I know how to swim, I've never mastered the art of treading water. Interestingly, regardless of your swimming skills, you can't sustain that effort indefinitely. At times, life can feel like a constant battle just to keep your head above water.

Every day, various distractions vie for our attention. We rush to work, dash home, and hurry through meals, leaving us with little time to relish our accomplishments.

In the serene town of Hanalei, located on one of Hawaii's islands, there's a humorous yet profound saying: "slow down." Having experienced this firsthand, I can assure you that the locals embody this principle. They enjoy the warm 80-degree weather, sip their coffee or smoothies, and take their time to unwind.

In contrast, American culture often encourages a fast-paced lifestyle, with phrases like "grab a bite" implying a quick, impersonal meal. In many other cultures, sharing a meal is a cherished event that can stretch over several hours.

One reason for our frantic pace is the lack of practical strategies to help us slow down. Here are three approaches that have aided me during different phases of my life:

  1. Journaling
  2. Reading
  3. Exercising

These aren't rigid prescriptions, but rather suggestions that I, along with many others, have found valuable.

Journaling allows you to decelerate your thoughts, offering a space to reflect deeply on your feelings and ideas. The beauty of a journal lies in its blank pages, which invite creativity and critical thinking.

Reading broadens your horizons across countless subjects. A good book or article can educate, entertain, or challenge your perspectives.

Lastly, exercise imposes physical stress on the body, leading to numerous benefits for both physical and mental health.

If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, know that you're not alone. However, it's essential to remember that you can't keep treading water forever.

Perhaps it's time to embrace Hanalei's wisdom: slow down, dear friend. Life is a marathon, not a sprint.
