Chapter 1: Overview of the Creative Destruction Lab
It has been nearly four years since I was invited by Barney Pell to join the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL), and my journey has been both fulfilling and enriching on personal and professional levels. Initially serving as an associate, I progressed to mentoring, and now I hold the title of Fellow.
CDL operates as a not-for-profit initiative aimed at fostering scalable, science-driven enterprises. Over a span of nine months, the program connects founders with seasoned entrepreneurs and investors, focusing on setting clear, measurable goals to enhance equity value. Established in 2012 by Professor Ajay Agrawal at the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto, CDL has expanded its reach, now present in cities like Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Halifax, and Oxford, UK. Since its launch, participating companies have collectively generated almost $5 billion in equity value. Notable alumni include North from Waterloo, Atomwise in San Francisco, Deep Genomics in Toronto, Automat from Montreal, Kyndi in Palo Alto, and Heuritech in Paris. Our expertise spans AI, Quantum Computing, and Robotics, and with our foundational role in the #LibraAssociation, we are increasingly influential in the blockchain sector. Remarkably, the CDL program transitioned to a fully virtual format utilizing Slack, Zoom, and a resilient spirit, achieving seamless operation—something larger and more established organizations have found challenging.
Now, in light of the #Covid19 pandemic and the global health crisis, we are excited to introduce a new stream within CDL focused on Recovery.
Innovative teams are encouraged to apply—this includes startups, established corporations, informal collaborations, individual inventors, social impact initiatives, and non-profit organizations—aiming to develop solutions that tackle pressing health and economic recovery issues stemming from the COVID-19 crisis. We invite you to join us in this essential endeavor.
