How I Managed to Stay Healthy for Seven Years Without Getting Sick

Chapter 1: My Journey to Better Health
For most of my life, I struggled with sleep. Achieving a full eight hours felt like a distant dream. Over the past twenty years, my nightly average hovered around 5 to 6 hours, often dipping lower. I tried various methods to improve my sleep, but they never seemed to work. I would either find myself wide awake at night, wake up needing the restroom, or simply not be able to fall back asleep.
I didn't adhere strictly to a sleep and exercise regimen; my attempts were half-hearted at best. However, recently, I managed to wake up refreshed after an astonishing 8.5 hours of sleep. It took some time for my body to adjust, but I've developed a straightforward routine that I initially implemented, abandoned, and then revived—with great success both times.
The key components of my routine include:
- Adhering to strict bedtimes and wake-up times without any exceptions.
- Ceasing all food and drink intake two hours before bedtime (which is really 2.5 hours before I actually sleep). I believe this adjustment was crucial, as I often ate late, leaving my body busy digesting food when it should have been winding down.
- Avoiding caffeine after 2 PM.
- Steering clear of blue-light-emitting devices an hour before bed.
- Spending 30 minutes in bed before my set sleep time, using that time to read or jot down my thoughts—essentially a wind-down period.
- Getting up at my designated wake time, regardless of how well I slept, and committing to at least 30 minutes of exercise most days.
Another vital aspect is staying hydrated—it's critical!
Oh, and here's something interesting: at one point, I didn’t have health insurance, which led me to decide that I simply wouldn’t get sick. Remarkably, it worked!
Next, I learned the importance of not touching my face, eyes, etc., unless my hands were freshly washed. A fascinating fact I picked up from a movie is that people touch their faces about 16 times an hour, often without realizing it. The best advice is to wash your hands frequently. Unfortunately, many adults wash their hands for a mere three seconds after using the restroom, which is quite unhygienic!
As a child, I had a rather unconventional upbringing—I even ate dirt! My mother believed it would boost my immune system, and it seems her theory was spot on!
