Finding Your Purpose: A Journey Beyond the Surface

Written on

Chapter 1: The Quest for Meaning

In our lives, one of the most formidable challenges we face is the pursuit of our "purpose." Whether it's landing a dream job, saving for retirement, or seeking a fulfilling relationship, the pressure to find meaning often breeds uncertainty and stress. Our self-worth often becomes entangled with milestones we achieve, making it easy to lose sight of our true selves.

During the years from eighteen to thirty-five, I dedicated myself to hard work and establishing a concrete life plan. To an outsider, my life seemed orderly and purposeful; I ticked off major milestones I had set for myself at a young age. This is the conventional narrative, right? Work diligently, achieve your goals, and you’ll find your purpose.

Yet, life can feel fleeting when we aren’t sincere with ourselves.

A pivotal lesson came from a mentor who shared a hard truth I wasn’t prepared to confront: "Your life didn’t change due to the divorce; it shifted because you didn’t trust yourself." This realization hit me hard. If I couldn't trust myself, why would the Universe or anyone else?

I gauged happiness, love, and success based solely on my achievements. When things went according to plan, my days brimmed with passion and meaning. However, when life derailed, the accomplishments that defined my self-worth vanished, plunging me into despair. I crafted a life centered on external validation, which took a heavy toll during my most vulnerable moments.

I kept this internal struggle hidden, feeling inadequate and shunning my truth to the point of choosing addiction, depression, and heartbreak over self-acceptance. As my marriage crumbled, the weight of my lies compelled me to confront who I truly was and how I affected those around me.

This struggle is common. We often believe we have control over our lives while ignoring our inner feelings. Many of us navigate life under identities shaped by family, friends, and societal expectations, leading to a sense of emptiness.

The reality is that genuine meaning in life cannot be found without self-honesty. Perhaps our purpose runs much deeper than the superficial lessons we've been conditioned to accept.

Viktor Frankl wisely stated, "Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked." This implies that meaning arises simply by living authentically. Our purpose is not defined by our actions but by who we are and how we experience life in the present.

We can achieve numerous milestones and make grand gestures, but if they don't resonate with our inner feelings, they hold little significance.

So, how do we uncover our life's meaning? How can we discern whether our actions make a difference?

Unfortunately, there are no simple solutions. Each of our lives is distinct, and so are our answers. However, one thing I’ve learned is that you are more capable than you think.

Chapter 2: The Path of Self-Discovery

A lifetime of evasion has taught me the importance of patience. Uncovering your true self demands time and reflection. When you discover something that excites and challenges you beyond your comfort zone, you’re likely on the path to something profound beneath the surface.

The question then arises: Do you possess the perseverance to explore your passion? Angela Duckworth, a researcher and New York Times bestselling author, refers to this as grit—the internal drive to push through challenges and persist when everything else pulls you away.

Finding your purpose necessitates digging deeper than what you've been led to believe. As you embark on this journey, you'll encounter shame, fear, doubt, and other barriers. While these experiences can be painful, persistent effort can lead to revelations far beyond your expectations.

I understand the urge to escape setbacks, failures, and limiting beliefs when you sense a calling. For many years, I avoided confronting these challenges, realizing only later that I wasn’t digging deep enough. I was willing to put in hard work, but I shied away from the profound introspection required. This led me to a path that felt misaligned. I felt lost. Instead of continuing my inner exploration, I resorted to addictions and depression.

Many people advised me to simply move on. They suggested I leverage my MBA to secure a conventional job and stop pursuing what seemed like a dream. However, I sensed something greater awaited me, and I chose not to let their opinions dictate my journey.

Fortunately, I encountered remarkable individuals who encouraged me to dig deeper into my own voice.

Every morning, I felt a call to write. I didn’t contemplate the end result; the words guided me to where I needed to go. What began as a therapeutic outlet evolved into the narrative you are reading now. My life’s essence spilled onto the pages as I filled walls with outlines, verses, and reflections on large Post-It Notes. Tears stained my journals. This process wasn’t instantaneous, and those who have achieved anything meaningful can attest to the labor required.

Most people never reach this point. They fund their dreams with spare change, settling for a surface-level existence and waiting for someone or something to rescue them. The energy needed to invest in what truly matters often dissipates in the pursuit of fleeting happiness—through casual conversations, social media scrolling, and superficial relationships that distract us from the deeper connection with ourselves.

Such distractions rob us of our essence.

Purpose doesn’t materialize from default choices that don’t align with your true self. No amount of money or hard work can force you into alignment with the purpose that stirs in your heart if you’re on an incorrect path. Discovering meaning requires you to embrace the storms of life and to explore who you are beneath the layers you’ve built up over time.

The more you understand your authentic self, free from societal masks, the better equipped you’ll be to navigate difficult transitions. When you have something worth fighting for, you can lead a life that resonates with authenticity.

These reflections aren’t meant to boast; rather, they highlight my journey through countless mistakes and repetitions. Embracing writing about my life experiences transformed the discipline and leadership skills I cultivated into something greater than myself.

What have I gleaned from my journey?

Beneath our superficial exteriors lies a wealth of complexity. If you never take the time to slow down and embrace who you are, you risk missing out on countless opportunities. Much of life revolves around the chase, and we often neglect to grant ourselves permission to delve deeper and heed our bodies' desires. This results in a perpetual cycle of problem-solving based on a life that feels imposed upon us.

Yet, you can delve deeper than the surface. It begins with a willingness to close your eyes and connect with the life you’ve been given. Acknowledge the two feet that have supported you through both dark and joyful times. Although challenging transitions may seem like turbulent seas of confusion, you can always return to this place of calm.

If you feel adrift, revisit this space often. Your breath will be a constant guide.

The more you can breathe deeply, the more you can radiate gratitude throughout your existence. In this state, you'll realize there's no need to pursue something that was never meant for you.

When I write each morning, a profound awakening occurs, creating a space for life to unfold. I believe this innate essence lies within all of us, yet the chaos of the world often stifles our ability to feel what we need for true freedom. This is why transitions can leave us feeling disoriented.

However, I assure you: aligning with the truth of who you are amid life's chaos is less exhausting than chasing after something or someone that will always elude you.

This is my invitation to you: delve deeper than the surface. Confront your challenges with curiosity. Pose the tough questions. Have the courage to claim the life you desire.

Pursue the answers to the profound questions that have lingered since the beginning. The more you understand yourself, the more you can live a life that is genuinely fulfilling. Choosing honesty with oneself remains one of the most vital actions you can undertake.

Recognize where you’ve overlooked your intuition and heart. As you begin to unearth the layers concealing your true self, you'll discover that your most significant work is just beginning.
