Chapter 1: Introduction to the Transition
If you're a software engineer aspiring to step into a Tech Lead or Manager position, or a data professional aiming to transition into a data leadership role, there are specific behaviors you must cultivate. Google's Project Oxygen identified ten essential traits that successful managers should embody. However, as an Individual Contributor (IC) juggling a demanding workload, dedicating time to develop these skills can be a lengthy process!
I have personally navigated the path from IC to VP of Engineering and Chief Data Officer. Throughout my career, I have guided numerous individuals in their evolution from IC roles to Tech Leadership positions. The key to quickly becoming an effective Tech Manager lies in mastering playbooks that address the typical scenarios you will face in management. This blog outlines 21 playbooks designed to aid you in managing common situations encountered in a tech leadership role.
These playbooks consist of 15-minute video tutorials. Originally created as training resources for fostering Tech Leadership at my startup, Unravel Data, their success prompted us to share them with a broader audience!
Let's dive into the learning process. The 21 scenario playbooks are categorized into eight sections, reflecting the essential managerial behaviors highlighted in Google's Project Oxygen.
To get the most out of these playbooks, consider this approach:
- Set aside 30 minutes daily for the next 21 days.
- Choose one playbook video to review for the first 15 minutes.
- Jot down 3-4 techniques typically covered in the video.
- Reflect on the last time you faced a similar scenario and think about how you might apply the playbook differently.
- Finally, start implementing these techniques in your daily practice. Remember, the most effective learning comes from applying and adapting what resonates with your leadership style.
