Exploring the Joy of Connection Through Poetry

Chapter 1: The Gathering

In a charming home perched on a hill's summit, a remarkable evening unfolded. Patrice welcomed us to her porch, which offered a stunning view of the city below—reminiscent of a picturesque postcard. The two majestic oak trees, often criticized for obstructing the scenery, actually enhanced its beauty in my eyes.

Her curious and protective dog sniffed around as we settled into Adirondack chairs, arranged around a makeshift table that doubled as a fire pit. Present were myself, Patrick, Natalia, her partner Levi, and a woman whose name currently eludes me.

"How did you two meet?" Patrice inquired of Levi and Natalia.

“Oh, you know,” they responded, embodying a zest for life. Patrice then turned her attention to Michael.

"What does that tattoo on your head say?"

"Chaos," Michael replied, twirling a pen as he reached for organic tortilla chips and average macarons.

“That’s a great prompt!” Patrice exclaimed, plopping down beside me.

We ultimately chose various prompts: one asked us to write from a leaf’s perspective, another focused on a haunting place, and yet another was for a memo about an invention. I decided to pen a piece about wigs—an innovation dating back to 3400 BC. Natalie envisioned a service where individuals could hire someone to cry alongside them, a concept I've heard exists somewhere in Asia. Patrice reminisced about a childhood slide, imagining a flight to the future like a stork.

As dusk settled in, the neighbor lit his tiki torches, and Patrick wrote about the leaf. The woman whose name I can’t remember mused on people's tendency for minimal effort and maximum charm—imagine a couch potato with a charming smile.

To some extent, this observation rings true. Meanwhile, the moon cast her gentle glow over us, accompanied by a soft breeze. She has spun her Sufi twirls in the vastness of space for 4.5 billion years, adorned with craters like acne scars, having taken a vow of simplicity.
