Exploring the Benefits of Obsidian for Enhanced Productivity

Written on

Chapter 1: A New Approach to Note-Taking

In my quest for useful applications, I've been intrigued by Obsidian for some time. Initially, I was hesitant and found myself drifting away from it. While it’s described as “a second brain,” its interface isn’t the most user-friendly and requires a bit of technical know-how to fully utilize its features.

Previously, I enjoyed using markdown and relied on Bear as my primary note-taking tool. However, I eventually returned to Evernote when they seemed to improve their offerings. Yet, they soon confused their user base by introducing calendar sync and task management features, which felt unnecessary.

So, within the Apple ecosystem, I turned to Apple Notes and Reminders. They serve their purpose, but I yearned for something more sophisticated. I revisited Obsidian, but it still struck me as overly technical. Was I wrong in my assumptions?

To clarify my doubts, I immersed myself in numerous YouTube videos and insightful articles, including one by Ellane W, which discussed using tags for focused daily productivity.

And another by Nicola Fisher, who debunked the myth that Obsidian is overly complicated by likening it to a house.

Chapter 2: Getting Started with Obsidian

Since first discovering Obsidian in April 2021, I dedicated many late nights to learning its capabilities. Finally, I took the plunge and downloaded the app.

Out of the box, Obsidian is free to use and is installed on both my work and personal MacBooks, as well as my iPhone, with everything synced through iCloud. One of its major advantages is that it uses standard markdown text files, which can be accessed in any text editor and are stored in a designated folder in iCloud. There's nothing proprietary about these files, which is fantastic!

Obsidian offers incredible flexibility, allowing me to accomplish all my note-taking needs. Its extensive customization options can be both a blessing and a curse, as it can lead to more tinkering than actual productivity. (Is it just me who gets caught in this trap?)

As I continue to refine my organizational methods, I've found that using tags suits me better than traditional folders. In the past, with Apple Notes and Evernote, I merely created a couple of folders for personal and work-related notes. Tags eliminate the need to assign a fixed location for each note.

I've also observed that the search functionality in Obsidian is robust, which is invaluable. Additionally, I'm impressed by its back-link feature, which connects notes and visualizes how they relate to each other.

Section 2.1: Enhancing Functionality with Plugins

The availability of plugins further enriches the user experience, such as the addition of a Calendar view. Ironically, this was one of my grievances with Evernote!

The Kanban board plugin stands out to me as particularly useful, as it allows for the integration of notes and tags in a powerful visual format for work tasks. Currently, I'm focusing on mastering the basics before diving deeper into the myriad of available plugins.

Section 2.2: Utilizing Drafts for Efficiency

Previously, I wrote about the benefits of using Drafts, where I created actions that allow me to compose notes in one location and then transfer them to Obsidian. This method has proven to be effective.

I've also discussed the drawbacks of frequent app switching, as it often leads to wasted time setting up new tools. This is something I’m experiencing now, but I believe that if I can find the right balance, Obsidian will be a valuable tool in my workflow for the foreseeable future.

If you're in search of a versatile note-taking solution that can elevate your productivity, I highly recommend giving Obsidian a try. At the very least, take a moment to explore its features.
