Exciting Updates on 1Password 8 for iOS Users

Chapter 1: Introduction to 1Password 8
I recently had the opportunity to explore the new version of 1Password 8 for macOS, which is absolutely remarkable. This experience got me curious about the release timeline for the iOS version. Coincidentally, later that day, Michael Fey shared a blog post announcing the Early Access launch of 1Password 8 for iOS. This is thrilling news, as there are four standout features in this version that have truly impressed me.
On a side note, while this post isn't sponsored by 1Password, I've collaborated closely with them to secure an excellent 25% discount for my loyal readers on their first year. You can take advantage of this offer here!
Section 1.1: A Unified User Experience
As I continue to explore beyond the Apple ecosystem this year, I have gained a more holistic understanding of Android and reconnected with Windows. This journey highlights the inherent challenges of developing cross-platform software. 1Password is accessible on almost every conceivable platform, yet the user experience often varies.
However, it's encouraging to hear from Fey that the 1Password team is making a significant effort to standardize their design across platforms. This commitment is evident in version 8, whether you're using Windows, Mac, or iOS. The interface across all devices is becoming increasingly consistent, and the new iOS design is both modern and aligned with the simplicity that has always defined this excellent password manager.

Section 1.2: The Personalized Home Tab
A notable addition in 1Password 8 for iOS is the new 'Home' tab, which is a fantastic improvement. While I appreciate using 1Password 7 on iOS, it lacked a foundational screen for users to start from, aside from ‘Favourites’. The Home tab in version 8 allows users to personalize the initial screen they encounter upon opening the app. This enhancement streamlines the user journey, eliminating any confusion about what to do next.
In addition to Favourites, which is now integrated within the Home tab, users can easily access their entire vault, Watchtower (more on this shortly), as well as recently added or modified items. This new feature allows for extensive customization, enabling users to tailor their 1Password 8 Home screen by removing unnecessary items and reorganizing the display according to their preferences.
Chapter 2: iPad-Specific Enhancements
Michael Fey describes the iPad version of 1Password 8 as “next-level” and “the iPad app I’ve always wanted us to build.” I’ve often found iPad apps that seem like afterthoughts frustrating. However, upon opening 1Password 8 on any iPad, it is immediately apparent that the app is designed specifically for the device's screen. The interface is clean, with a centralized navigation sidebar replacing the bottom navigation bar.
Furthermore, the new item button has been distinctly separated from the sidebar, making it easier to locate. The app feels truly optimized for the iPad, and like its iPhone counterpart, it includes one of the most beneficial features—Watchtower.

Section 2.1: Full Watchtower Functionality
Fey emphasizes that previously, “only fragments of Watchtower have been available on iOS.” However, with 1Password 8 for iOS and iPadOS, the complete Watchtower functionality is now accessible. The design for Watchtower on these devices is impressive and has encouraged me to tackle overdue password updates. The convenience of being able to manage my passwords from anywhere is both reassuring and motivating.
What Lies Ahead?
While there’s currently no announcement regarding the official public release of 1Password 8 for iOS, the TestFlight version already feels quite stable. Although a few features are still missing, most of these pertain to settings, and I’m excited to use this version while awaiting the official launch. Fey has mentioned that additional features are on the horizon, including support for Apple Watch, more content for the Home tab, and enhanced account management.
If you’re interested in trying out the 1Password 8 beta for iOS, it’s quite simple—just download TestFlight via this link, and revisit the same link on your iPhone after installation. Don't worry; you can continue using 1Password 7 alongside it without any issues.
Happy testing! I look forward to seeing how this app evolves.
