Empower Yourself Against Climate Change: Embrace New Careers

Chapter 1: Introduction to Climate Change Solutions
As I delve deeper into the topic of climate change, I frequently encounter proposed solutions that seem ineffective or impractical. Among the common suggestions are degrowth, carbon taxation, decreased consumption, veganism, halting fossil fuel usage, advocating simplicity, and even reducing population. Usually, these ideas are presented as, “We need to…” and fill in the blank with whatever perspective resonates with the speaker.
However, it’s time to confront the reality of these proposals.
The fundamental issue with these suggestions is that they demand individuals to act against their personal desires and require leaders to transcend existing systems for the benefit of the planet. When was the last time a political figure made such a sacrifice? When have people willingly chosen to forgo what they believe is in their own best interest?
Let’s be honest. Many advocates select a philosophy that suits their lifestyles and expect everyone else to conform. If you’re promoting veganism, it’s likely because you are a vegan and find it fulfilling. If you support population reduction, perhaps you’ve decided not to have children. Advocates of degrowth might be people who are positioned to succeed in a shrinking economy.
When someone claims, “We need to end consumerism,” one must question who exactly “we” refers to and what actions this “we” would take. Are we suggesting burning down stores that promote consumerism? Should we eliminate advertising entirely? Are we prepared to stop producing essential goods like food, clothing, and vehicles? Do we truly want a monotonous society where options are limited to a single choice, reminiscent of Henry Ford’s famous statement about car colors?
These calls for change often lack substance. Although many believe they are challenging the status quo or demanding transformation, such statements frequently lack specifics and result in no tangible changes.
What can you do to genuinely impact climate change?
GET A NEW JOB!
Seek employment that prioritizes meaningful contributions—such as developing innovative energy sources and creating products that utilize these energies. Renewable energy options include solar, wind, geothermal, and advancements in battery technology and electric grid management. The innovative products of this new era encompass electric vehicles, heat pumps, and electric heating solutions. This is where your skills in engineering, marketing, business, human resources, and more are crucial, as they can drive significant change.
Not in the business sector? Consider educating the younger generation about climate solutions, sharing knowledge within your community, or advocating for policies that support practical strategies to combat climate change.
To truly harness human creativity and potential for climate solutions, our employment must center around them. Most of our energy is devoted to our jobs. If your current role does not contribute to technological advancements necessary for change, then you are inadvertently part of the problem. The world requires your intellect, skills, and creativity to tackle this challenge. Why hold back? Simply instructing others to live in a particular way is insufficient.
If you are genuinely committed to addressing climate change, pursue a career where you can dedicate substantial hours—forty, fifty, or sixty each week—to this cause. Focus on achievable solutions rather than unrealistic campaigns urging everyone to alter their lifestyles, as those are likely to fail.
Henry Ford understood a vital truth: when the system produces a singular product, that is what consumers will purchase. Thus, we can effect change by modifying the options available within the system, rather than trying to convince people to change their habits. When all electricity derives from renewable sources, personal lifestyles become secondary—they will only be able to access renewable energy. Similarly, if only electric vehicles are available, that’s what consumers will buy. When heat pumps are the only means of home heating, the reliance on fossil fuels will diminish.
This is not a complex issue. Making solutions-based technology commonplace is far simpler than reverting society to primitive living. It is more effective to provide better solutions than to impose dietary restrictions. For this to happen, the world needs your utmost dedication, creativity, and commitment. Transform climate change solutions into your profession, and you will contribute to meaningful change.
