Embracing Change: Inventorying Your Habits for Growth

Written on

Chapter 1: Recognizing Patterns for Personal Growth

Reflecting on the past week, I realized the significance of identifying the patterns and habits that shape my life. Some are beneficial, like the daily routine of brushing and flossing, while others hinder my progress, such as failing to uphold commitments to myself or completing projects. Our habits and patterns guide our direction in life. Here are four key insights I gained about habits this week.

Patterns of Growth and Habits
  1. Replacing Habits Instead of Breaking Them

This week, I came across a valuable lesson from Mel Robbins: habits aren't broken; they’re replaced. Although I’ve heard this before, it took me a few repetitions for it to really resonate. Mel emphasized the need to identify and disrupt unhealthy patterns in order to cultivate healthier ones on GrowthDay.

For instance, if you often have negative self-talk, start by acknowledging those thoughts. Then, immediately substitute them with something positive. Instead of saying, "I’m not fast enough," say, "I’m sufficiently fast given my focus and dedication to learning." The most essential habit we can nurture is self-kindness; become your own biggest supporter and allow yourself the grace to make mistakes.

  1. The Power of Your Thoughts

It’s a fact: what you consume is a minor aspect of who you are, whereas your thoughts have a profound impact. This week, I watched a video by Ed Mylett on his YouTube channel discussing the importance of auditing your thoughts. When was the last time you took stock of your mindset?

It had been a while for me until February when I recognized how harshly I was criticizing myself, which negatively affected my work and relationships. I took the time to identify those damaging thoughts and replaced them with affirming ones. If you're aiming for significant change, take a moment to catalog your thoughts. Write them down instead of simply thinking about them. Following Ed Mylett’s advice:

  • Keep the supportive thoughts.
  • Replace those that are detrimental (remember, you replace habits, you don’t just eliminate them).
  • Regularly review your most impactful thoughts by writing them down where you can see them.
  1. Understanding Your Motivations

We are constantly surrounded by opportunities. Each day presents us with chances we desire and others that leave us uncertain. Reflect on how many aspirations you have and whether you understand the reasons behind wanting them. Jenna Kutcher highlighted the importance of knowing your motivations during her recent GrowthDay coaching session.

Consider how often you contemplate pursuing something yet never follow through despite having the necessary resources. Many individuals receive similar ideas and opportunities. For instance, how many have considered writing regularly on Medium? Knowing your motivation can significantly increase your likelihood of action. If you articulate your "why," you're more inclined to take the leap—sharing it with someone else can boost your commitment even more.

  1. Creating Your List

After reflecting on what I’m currently learning, I recognized the need to compile a comprehensive list of everything I’ve promised to myself and the projects I wish to pursue. This list isn’t merely a to-do list; it serves as a reality check and an audit of my unfulfilled commitments.

Today, I will:

  • Document every project idea I have.
  • Recall and note why I want to pursue each idea.
  • Record when I initially conceived these ideas or started working on them.
  • Prioritize them and set deadlines for completion.

To redirect my life, I must honor the promises I make to myself. It’s essential to care for my well-being—such as drinking 64 ounces of water daily and making my bed each morning. It’s time to focus on completing my tasks and creating a positive inventory of thoughts and projects in my life.
