If you have a passion, the thought of retirement might not even cross your mind. Personally, I discovered my love for writing three years ago, and I believe it will be my lifelong pursuit. If you want to identify your true passion and never worry about retirement again, here are ten habits to abandon.

1. Worrying About Others' Opinions

I began writing online at the age of 25. When a coworker found out, he mocked my efforts, claiming my writing was overly simplistic and immature. At the time, I laughed it off, but secretly, I was relieved they hadn't criticized me earlier, as my confidence was quite fragile.

While it’s important to value the opinions of certain people in your life, focus only on those who genuinely support your success and whom you respect. If someone doesn’t fit that criterion, it’s time to move on.

2. Idealizing Your Dreams

The journey toward fulfilling your dreams often resembles a reality far from the fairy tales we envision. Contrary to popular belief, starting is not the hardest part; it’s navigating the journey from beginning to success that truly tests your resolve.

When you’re pouring your heart into something and aren’t seeing immediate results, it’s easy to assume you’re failing. However, it's crucial to reframe your thinking: pursuing your dreams requires 99% effort and only 1% recognition.

3. Chasing Cheap Thrills

Life is rife with distractions that provide fleeting pleasure. At 24, I often felt lost, trapped in a cycle of dissatisfaction with my job, and using binge-watching and social media to escape my reality.

Eventually, I realized that these distractions were hindering my growth. To create a fulfilling life, I needed to stop indulging in these instant gratifications and instead invest in my future.

4. Engaging in Meaningless Conversations

I've had countless internal dialogues about striving for more. In 2019, I spent a year feeling disappointed in myself, replaying the same thoughts without resolution.

One day, I decided to take action instead of continuing these empty conversations. It was time to seek answers rather than dwell on questions that led nowhere.

5. Overloading on Goal-Setting

Every New Year, I would create an ambitious list of goals, filled with unrealistic aspirations that I had no real plan to achieve. I was simply inflating my ego with grand ideas.

Instead of writing down lofty goals, it's more beneficial to get to work directly. Action should precede the goal-setting process.

6. Relying Solely on Self-Help

I genuinely enjoy self-improvement literature and the pursuit of personal growth. However, it's easy to fall into the trap of consuming self-help content without applying it to your life.

Utilize these resources as tools for motivation, but remember that real progress comes from taking action.

7. Obsessing Over Future Milestones

Focusing excessively on future achievements can be dangerous. If you’re not careful, you might spend your entire life anticipating the next milestone, missing out on the beauty of the present moment.

The happiest individuals I know prioritize optimizing their current experiences rather than fixating on what’s next.

8. Deceiving Yourself About Your Desires

It’s okay if big business isn't your goal. If you have no desire for a lavish lifestyle, that’s perfectly fine too. For a long time, I convinced myself I wanted to climb the corporate ladder, but when I managed a team, I realized it wasn’t for me.

Chase your own dreams, not the ones society pushes on you.

9. Making Hollow Commitments

The turning point in my life was when I began fulfilling the promises I made to myself. For years, I spoke of various ambitions but never acted on them. The moment I shifted to taking action, everything changed.

10. Believing You Can't

This is the most crucial point. As Henry Ford famously said, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't — you're right." I consider myself an average person, yet I transformed my life significantly in the past three years through one fundamental mindset shift: I started believing in myself.
