Embrace Imperfection: How to Break Free from the Chains of Perfectionism

Written on

Chapter 1: The Weight of Perfectionism

I have often found myself ensnared by the pursuit of perfection. Achieving top grades in school and meticulously following the roadmap to a prestigious university led to coveted internships and a lucrative career in tech.

With a high GPA, participation in varsity sports, and a well-rounded persona, I ticked every box.

However, as time passed, the quest for “perfection” transformed into an unbearable expectation.

Suddenly, receiving an A was insufficient; it had to be an A+. Questions plagued me: Why did I overlook that mistake? You’re smarter than this.

I felt compelled to be the best in my class, constantly comparing myself to others. If I didn’t excel beyond expectations, I viewed myself as a failure. My need for perfection became a heavy burden.

Struggling with Perfectionism

From an external viewpoint, everything seemed commendable. However, internally, I battled against the relentless pressure of my self-imposed standards.

This struggle was merely a façade, masking intense anxiety, stress, sleepless nights, and bouts of depression. If I encountered a challenging topic in college or needed to delay a project, I would become paralyzed.

Failure loomed large, and my accomplishments only seemed to elevate the heights of my expectations. Perfectionism had become my identity, driven solely by fear.

Chapter 2: Wisdom from Japan

In Nikko, Japan, a renowned Shinto shrine known as Toshogu Shrine features a unique structure—Yomeimon Gate. This gate includes twelve pillars, one of which is deliberately inverted, termed “sakabashira.”

The Japanese embedded this upside-down pillar into the architecture as a cultural belief that perfection invites misfortune.

They held that the moment something reaches perfection, it begins to deteriorate. Thus, this intentional imperfection serves as a reminder to embrace flaws rather than pursue an unattainable ideal.

Finding Authenticity Through Imperfection

In my journey, writing has become a liberating outlet for imperfection. My initial drafts are often chaotic, overflowing with raw thoughts. Despite my desire to refine them endlessly, I force myself to hit that “Publish” button.

Surprisingly, the more mistakes I make, the more my writing resonates with others. Perfection often feels detached, as it fails to reflect the genuine human experience.

“Perfection” is merely a mask shaped by societal expectations, not an authentic representation of oneself. Embracing imperfection reveals the true essence of who we are.

Flip Your Perspective on Perfection

Let the Japanese philosophy of the upside-down pillar inspire you.

My lifelong chase for perfection led me to mental turmoil. When perfection is the only acceptable outcome, everything else feels like defeat.

As the Japanese wisdom suggests, striving for flawlessness invites ill fortune. However, if you view yourself as a continuous work in progress, you cannot truly fail; instead, you can only grow and learn.

Dare to engage in something imperfect intentionally. Explore new endeavors and allow yourself to make mistakes.

Take risks, even if it challenges conventional notions of success. Release rigid expectations and focus on the journey rather than the destination.

Share your vulnerabilities; even when life appears flawless, everyone has their struggles.

You can still strive for excellence without the burden of perfection. Accept that being “good enough” is sufficient.

You are enough as you are.
