Are we nearing a future where we might need to plug in a device to charge a chip in our brain each night? Or are we truly at risk of being overrun by robots designed to eliminate us, a concern voiced by Elon Musk? It's worth pondering whether AI could ultimately be a boon or a bane for humanity.
Two primary anxieties surround AI technology: the fear that it may gain consciousness and target humans, or that nefarious individuals could exploit AI for harmful purposes. Stephen Hawking famously suggested that AI might be humanity's greatest achievement or its gravest mistake. Musk has also warned that AI-enabled machines could one day pose an existential threat, perhaps even "deleting" humanity as one would delete spam emails. Thankfully, as of now (2021), this catastrophic scenario has not unfolded. But, is this a possibility we should take seriously?
The Reality of Autonomous Weapons
The perception of "killer robots" varies based on context. On the battlefield, automated systems have been employed for years, where speed is crucial. In scenarios where human reaction times cannot match the pace of warfare, machines are increasingly taking over.
Similar to the automatic braking features found in modern vehicles, such defense mechanisms have existed for decades. Just as car manufacturers have gradually integrated more automation, military forces have also begun to grant machines greater autonomy. Paul Scharre's article, "Are AI-Powered Killer Robots Inevitable?" illustrates this with a scenario involving an automated kill chain: A satellite detects a mock enemy ship and commands a surveillance aircraft to investigate, which then communicates with a command center that decides to engage a naval destroyer for an attack. This automation allows human operators more time to deliberate before making critical decisions.
Since the late 19th century, powerful nations have attempted to regulate military technologies, from explosive projectiles to chemical weapons and nuclear arms, aiming to lessen the destruction caused by conflicts. However, the debate around autonomous weapons has reached a stalemate, largely due to two main issues: differing definitions and varying interpretations of what constitutes an autonomous weapon. While many countries advocate for new regulations ensuring human oversight of automated weapons, others, like the United States, argue that current international laws are sufficient. The lack of clarity regarding substantive human control highlights the need for more precise international guidelines. But what if we reach a point of singularity with autonomous weapons on the battlefield?

How might AI be misused? Examples include "smart dust," drones, surveillance systems, disinformation campaigns, and more, ranging from economic crimes to privacy invasions.
Such instances are not mere hypotheticals. For example, the spread of false information via bots during the 2016 presidential election illustrates how targeted misinformation can serve specific agendas. This anxiety can be weaponized to harm individuals or disrupt governmental processes. Another concerning application is the creation of deepfakes, manipulated content that poses significant risks to both businesses and government integrity. According to Forbes, the global community is alarmingly unprepared for AI's unregulated introduction into society.
The Need for Context and Diversity in AI
In an increasingly AI-driven world, the examples discussed highlight the necessity for more context and diversity in how we approach technology. These innovations are already reshaping our social values and freedoms. It is crucial to integrate a wider array of perspectives and understandings into the development of AI systems. Ultimately, it falls upon us, as citizens, to educate ourselves about both the positive and negative potential of AI.
As consumers and beneficiaries of technological progress, we will encounter AI in more aspects of our daily lives. Therefore, we must examine how these advancements affect us. We should strive to view AI not merely as a set of neutral algorithms but as a significant political and social philosophy.
