Boosting Your Medium Subscriber Count: Strategies That Work

Written on

Understanding Followers vs. Subscribers on Medium

When a user subscribes to you on Medium, they receive a notification that looks something like this: Screenshot of author's notifications.

Followers

To follow a writer on Medium, it's as simple as visiting their profile and hitting the 'follow' button. However, many writers mistakenly claim they have "1000 subscribers," which is not accurate.

The primary concern with followers is that due to Medium's peculiar algorithm and limited distribution chances, your articles are only visible to a minuscule percentage of them.

Subscribers

On the other hand, subscribers are significantly more valuable! These individuals actively visit your profile and click the email icon, indicating that they want to receive an email notification every time you publish a new piece.

There are a couple of challenges here as well. First, Medium sometimes has glitches that prevent some users from receiving these emails. Second, if you post a very brief article, readers can view the entire content directly in their email without clicking through, which means you miss out on views and reads. Nonetheless, email subscribers are your most devoted and engaged readers.

My Journey to Increasing Subscriber Count

Before I outline the strategy that proved effective for me, let's take a look at my monthly growth in subscribers since I joined Medium, up until March.

Now, let's explore the strategy that yielded results for me—a straightforward call-to-action (CTA) that many overlook.

In mid-February, I started adding this line to the end of nearly every story:

"Subscribe here to never miss any updates from the author."

This simple CTA made a remarkable difference! Even some of my existing followers began subscribing to my profile, and I started receiving notifications like this:

It's essential to note that these were my current followers who subscribed only after I implemented this CTA, as opposed to the earlier screenshot depicting follow + subscribe.

Therefore, activate all your email subscription options, set up a customer email subscription message through Medium settings, and encourage friends and family to subscribe to your profile via email.

If you found this content helpful, please give it 50 claps! 😊
