A Bet That Might Have Saved Ryan Reynolds from Colorectal Cancer

The Importance of Cancer Awareness
Cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age or health status, and it's crucial to recognize its potential dangers. Ryan Reynolds took a proactive step by filming his first colonoscopy to promote awareness about colorectal cancer. This decision proved fortuitous, as it led to the discovery and removal of an undiagnosed polyp that could have posed a serious risk.
This initiative stemmed from a bet made in 2021 with his friend, fellow actor Rob McElhenney. To see more about this, check out the video below:
Had Ryan not lost that bet, he might have missed out on a procedure that ultimately saved his life. Sadly, many individuals are not as fortunate.
Regular Screenings Are Essential
In the United States, it is advised that individuals begin regular colorectal cancer screenings at 45. In Australia, those at risk—essentially everyone these days—are encouraged to undergo an immunochemical fecal occult blood test every two years from ages 50 to 74. These tests are available at no cost for that age group.
Currently, Bowel Cancer Australia is advocating for the government to expand the eligibility for screenings to include those aged 40 to 84. This is crucial, especially since there is a significant rise in bowel cancer incidents among individuals aged 49 to 50. Often, by the time these individuals are diagnosed, the cancer has progressed to a more advanced stage, indicating that it may have been undetected for years.
If a fecal occult blood test returns positive, the next step is typically a colonoscopy. In Ryan's case, his doctor discovered a small polyp in his colon, which was promptly removed.
Rob McElhenney’s Experience
Rob McElhenney, who recently turned 45, also agreed to undergo a colonoscopy for the video. He anticipated that the doctors would either find something significant or nothing at all. Ultimately, he had three small polyps, which, while not alarming, were removed to prevent future complications.
This video aims to raise cancer awareness through the organization "Lead from Behind," which seeks to make cancer a more widely recognized issue, potentially partnering with the Colorectal Cancer Alliance.
The video illustrates the colonoscopy process, showcasing how straightforward it is and the quick recovery involved. Having undergone several colonoscopies myself, I can attest that they are relatively simple procedures. The preparation may be challenging, but the life-saving potential makes it worthwhile.
While my gastroenterologist has advised me to wait until I'm 50 for my next screening, there’s no harm in being proactive about your health. This is true for both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals alike. Ryan and Rob had no symptoms yet still chose to proceed with their screenings.
