Be Like a Soap Bubble: Embracing the Beauty of Existence

Chapter 1: The Perfect Shape of a Soap Bubble

What causes a soap bubble to take on that flawless spherical form? Remarkably, even when blown through a non-circular opening, a bubble will eventually become a sphere if the conditions are calm enough. This phenomenon is due to surface tension, where the soapy liquid particles are more cohesive with each other than with the surrounding air. The internal and external pressures reach an equilibrium, allowing the ultra-thin soap film to minimize its surface area and conserve energy, which results in a sphere with a constant mean curvature.

As it floats gracefully, dancing amidst the air currents, this ephemeral gem becomes a captivating sight — iridescent and transparent, reflecting light in a spectrum of colors. While it resembles other bubbles, each one is distinct upon closer inspection.

The soap bubble captivates not just with its visual beauty, but also with its underlying mathematical principles, exemplifying nature’s affinity for efficiency and smoothness. It brings joy to children and serves as inspiration for scientists and engineers alike.

And then — POP, it vanishes.

Ancient Stoic philosophy posited that the breath (pneuma) of the divine animates all creation. This idea resonates as a guiding principle — breath signifies movement (air) and warmth (fire), infusing matter with varying degrees of both.

At the core of existence, everything is unified by the “tension” (tonos) imparted by this breath, similar to a soap bubble. The human spirit embodies the greatest amount of fire, granting us reason and a closer connection to the divine.

All things fall into order, as nature embodies efficiency and seeks smoothness. According to Stoic thought, the ideal way for a person to live is to act in harmony with nature — to embrace the smoothness and efficiency inherent in the natural world through our capacity for rational thought. Achieving this alignment leads to excellence (arête) and peace of mind (apatheia).

It’s sensible to care for our bodies as one would for a well-kept guest room. It’s rational to recognize that feeling upset when things don’t go as planned is a choice. It’s wise to find contentment in what we have rather than longing for more.

Reason and mathematics are intertwined, with mathematics serving as nature’s language. To be reasonable is to align oneself with nature, discovering that ideal curvature and smoothness that it cherishes.

Every individual emerges into existence from a point of vulnerability, filled with potential and intelligence. Fortunately, some manage to avoid an early demise, while others struggle to achieve that perfect shape or may never find it.

The internal pressures of our emotions and the external pressures of life’s challenges often hinder our ability to find balance. Expectations can lead to disappointment, and intelligence can feel restless.

Desires fuel these imbalances — whether for status, recognition, material comforts, or fleeting pleasures. When faced with challenges from the outside world, we may react with greed, weakness, anger, or turmoil, testing the fragile membrane that binds us.

Yet, akin to the soap bubble’s film, we strive to maintain our integrity. By calming our inner pressures, we can withstand the external fluctuations. We must recognize that while we cannot control the universe outside, we can govern our inner thoughts. By doing so, we can discover the harmony and smoothness that nature seeks.

Finding that balance allows us to thrive gently, existing as a droplet of matter infused with warmth and air — a jewel that possesses the integrity to reflect the perfection nature intends for us, enabling us to realize our fullest potential.

And then, POP, you’re gone.
