According to a study featured in the journal Current Biology, five tree fossils, preserved by an earthquake 350 million years ago, were discovered in a quarry located in New Brunswick, Canada. "They serve as time capsules," explained Robert Gastaldo, a paleontologist and sedimentologist who headed the research. "They provide us with glimpses into ancient landscapes and ecosystems." Co-researchers Olivia King and Matthew Stimson first discovered these ancient trees during fieldwork in 2017 at a rock quarry in New Brunswick. King noted that these fossils could easily be imagined as part of the whimsical world depicted in The Lorax, stating, "The trees there have large pom-poms atop slender trunks, much like these might have appeared."
